O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary |
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. | 3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. |
They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. |
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. |
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. |
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. | 7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. |
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; | 10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, |
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: | 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. | 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. |
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder. | 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. |
Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. | 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. |
Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. | 18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. |
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. | 20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing. | 22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. |
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; |
These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. | 24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. |
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. | 25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. | 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. |
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. |
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. |
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. | 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. |
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. | 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. | 32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. |
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; | 33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; |
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. | 34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. |
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings. | 35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; |
And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; | 36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, |
And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. | 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. |
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. | 38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. |
Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. | 39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, |
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. | 40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. |
Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. | 41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. |
The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. | 42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. |
Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD. | 43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. |
