O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. |
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe |
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. | 3and has gathered them from the lands-- from the east and the west, from the north and the south. |
They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. | 4Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. |
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. |
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He rescued them from their distress. |
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. | 7He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. |
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; | 10Others sat in darkness and gloom-- prisoners in cruel chains-- |
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: | 11because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. |
Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. | 12He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. |
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. |
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. | 14He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder. | 16For He has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. |
Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. | 17Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their sins. |
Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. | 18They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. |
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. |
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. | 20He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing. | 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy. |
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; | 23Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast waters. |
These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. | 24They saw the LORD's works, His wonderful works in the deep. |
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. | 25He spoke and raised a tempest that stirred up the waves of the sea. |
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. | 26Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, |
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. | 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was useless. |
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. | 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. |
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. | 29He stilled the storm to a murmur, and the waves of the sea were hushed. |
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. | 30They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for. |
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. | 32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders. |
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; | 33He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, |
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. | 34and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. |
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings. | 35He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. |
And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; | 36He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. |
And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. | 37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. |
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. | 38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their livestock decrease. |
Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. | 39When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, |
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. | 40He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. |
Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. | 41But He lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. |
The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. | 42The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. |
Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD. | 43Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. |
