So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. | 1Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. |
Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God. | 2But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned because he justified himself before God. |
Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. | 3And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. |
Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he. | 4Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were years older than he. |
When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. | 5And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned. |
And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. | 6So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite spoke out and said, "I am young in years and you are old; Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you what I think. |
I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. | 7"I thought age should speak, And increased years should teach wisdom. |
But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. | 8"But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding. |
Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. | 9"The abundant in years may not be wise, Nor may elders understand justice. |
Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion. | 10"So I say, 'Listen to me, I too will tell what I think.' |
Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say. | 11"Behold, I waited for your words, I listened to your reasonings, While you pondered what to say. |
Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words: | 12"I even paid close attention to you; Indeed, there was no one who refuted Job, Not one of you who answered his words. |
Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man. | 13"Do not say, 'We have found wisdom; God will rout him, not man.' |
Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches. | 14"For he has not arranged his words against me, Nor will I reply to him with your arguments. |
They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. | 15"They are dismayed, they no longer answer; Words have failed them. |
When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;) | 16"Shall I wait, because they do not speak, Because they stop and no longer answer? |
I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion. | 17"I too will answer my share, I also will tell my opinion. |
For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me. | 18"For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me. |
Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. | 19"Behold, my belly is like unvented wine, Like new wineskins it is about to burst. |
I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. | 20"Let me speak that I may get relief; Let me open my lips and answer. |
Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. | 21"Let me now be partial to no one, Nor flatter any man. |
For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away. | 22"For I do not know how to flatter, Else my Maker would soon take me away. |
