Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, | 1The LORD responded to Job from the whirlwind and said: |
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? | 2"Who is this who keeps darkening my counsel without knowing what he's talking about? |
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. | 3Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!" |
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. | 4"Where were you when I laid the foundation of my earth? Tell me, since you're so informed! |
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? | 5Who set its measurement? Am I to assume you know? Who stretched a boundary line over it? |
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; | 6On what were its bases set? Who laid its corner stone |
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? | 7while the morning stars sang together and all the divine beings shouted joyfully? |
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? | 8"Who enclosed the sea with limits when it gushed out of the womb, |
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, | 9when I made clouds to be its clothes and thick darkness its swaddling blanket, |
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, | 10when I proscribed a boundary for it, set in place bars and doors for it; |
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? | 11and said, 'You may come only this far and no more. Your majestic waves will stop here.'? |
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; | 12"Have you ever commanded the morning at any time during your life? Do you know where the dawn lives, |
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? | 13where it seizes the edge of the earth and shakes the wicked out of it? |
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. | 14Like clay is molded by a signet ring, the earth's hills and valleys then stand out like the colors of a garment. |
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken. | 15Then from the wicked their light is withheld and their upraised arm is broken. |
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? | 16"Have you been to the source of the sea and walked about in the recesses of the deepest ocean? |
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? | 17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? |
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all. | 18Do you understand the breadth of the earth? Tell me, since you know it all! |
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, | 19"Where is the road to where the light lives? Or where does the darkness live? |
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? | 20Can you take it to its homeland, since you know the path to his house? |
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great? | 21You should know! After all, you had been born back then, so the number of your days is great! |
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, | 22"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen where the hail is stored, |
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? | 23which I've reserved for the tribulation to come, for the day of battle and war? |
By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth? | 24Where is the lightning diffused or the east wind scattered around the earth? |
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; | 25"Who cuts canals for storm floods, and paths for the lightning and thunder, |
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; | 26to bring rain upon a land without inhabitants, a desert in which no human beings live, |
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? | 27to satisfy a desolate and devastated desert, causing it to sprout vegetation? |
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew? | 28"Does the rain have a father? Who fathered the dew? |
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? | 29Whose womb brings forth the ice? Who gives birth to frost out of an empty sky, |
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. | 30when water solidifies like stone and the surface of the deepest sea freezes? |
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? | 31"Can you bind the chains of Pleiades or loosen the cords of Orion? |
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? | 32Can you bring out constellations in their season? Can you guide the Bear with her cubs? |
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? | 33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you regulate their authority over the earth? |
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? | 34"Can you call out to the clouds, so that abundant water drenches you? |
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are? | 35Can you command the lightning, so that it goes forth and calls to you, 'Look at us!' |
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart? | 36"Who sets wisdom within you, or imbues your mind with understanding? |
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven, | 37Who has the wisdom to be able to count the clouds, or to empty the water jars of heaven, |
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together? | 38when dust dries into a mass and then breaks apart into clods? |
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions, | 39"Can you hunt prey for the lioness to satisfy young lions |
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? | 40when they crouch in their dens and lie in ambush in their lairs? |
Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat. | 41Who prepares food for the raven, when its offspring cry out to God as they wander for lack of food?" |
