International Standard Version | New Living Translation |
God, whom I praise, do not be silent, | 1O God, whom I praise, don’t stand silent and aloof |
for the mouths of wicked and deceitful people are opened against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. | 2while the wicked slander me and tell lies about me. |
They surround me with hate-filled words, attacking me for no reason. | 3They surround me with hateful words and fight against me for no reason. |
Instead of receiving my love, they accuse me, though I continue in prayer. | 4I love them, but they try to destroy me with accusations even as I am praying for them! |
They devise evil against me instead of good, and hatred in place of my love. | 5They repay evil for good, and hatred for my love. |
Appoint an evil person over him; may an accuser stand at his right side. | 6They say, “Get an evil person to turn against him. Send an accuser to bring him to trial. |
When he is judged, may he be found guilty; may his prayer be regarded as sin. | 7When his case comes up for judgment, let him be pronounced guilty. Count his prayers as sins. |
May his days be few; may another take over his position. | 8Let his years be few; let someone else take his position. |
May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow. | 9May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow. |
May his children roam around begging, seeking food while driven far from their ruined homes. | 10May his children wander as beggars and be driven from their ruined homes. |
May creditors seize all his possessions, and may foreigners loot the property he has acquired. | 11May creditors seize his entire estate, and strangers take all he has earned. |
May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children. | 12Let no one be kind to him; let no one pity his fatherless children. |
May his descendants be eliminated, and their memory be erased from the next generation. | 13May all his offspring die. May his family name be blotted out in the next generation. |
May his ancestors' guilt be remembered in the LORD's presence, and may his mother's guilt not be erased. | 14May the LORD never forget the sins of his fathers; may his mother’s sins never be erased from the record. |
May what they have done be continually in the LORD's presence; and may their memory be excised from the earth. | 15May the LORD always remember these sins, and may his name disappear from human memory. |
For he didn't think to extend gracious love; he harassed to death the poor, the needy, and the broken hearted. | 16For he refused all kindness to others; he persecuted the poor and needy, and he hounded the brokenhearted to death. |
He loved to curse—may his curses return upon him! He took no delight in blessing others — so may blessings be far from him. | 17He loved to curse others; now you curse him. He never blessed others; now don’t you bless him. |
He wore curses like a garment— may they enter his inner being like water and his bones like oil. | 18Cursing is as natural to him as his clothing, or the water he drinks, or the rich food he eats. |
May those curses wrap around him like a garment, or like a belt that one always wears. | 19Now may his curses return and cling to him like clothing; may they be tied around him like a belt.” |
May this be the way the LORD repays my accuser, those who speak evil against me. | 20May those curses become the LORD’s punishment for my accusers who speak evil of me. |
Now you, LORD my God, defend me for your name's sake; because your gracious love is good, deliver me! | 21But deal well with me, O Sovereign LORD, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good. |
Indeed, I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain. |
I am fading away like a shadow late in the day; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I am fading like a shadow at dusk; I am brushed off like a locust. |
My knees give way from fasting, and my skin is lean, deprived of oil. | 24My knees are weak from fasting, and I am skin and bones. |
I have become an object of derision to them— they shake their heads whenever they see me. | 25I am a joke to people everywhere; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn. |
Help me, LORD my God! Deliver me in accord with your gracious love! | 26Help me, O LORD my God! Save me because of your unfailing love. |
Then they will realize that your hand is in this— that you, LORD, have accomplished it. | 27Let them see that this is your doing, that you yourself have done it, LORD. |
They will curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, while your servant rejoices. | 28Then let them curse me if they like, but you will bless me! When they attack me, they will be disgraced! But I, your servant, will go right on rejoicing! |
May my accusers be clothed with shame and wrapped in their humiliation as with a robe. | 29May my accusers be clothed with disgrace; may their humiliation cover them like a cloak. |
I will give many thanks to the LORD with my mouth, praising him publicly, | 30But I will give repeated thanks to the LORD, praising him to everyone. |
for he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to deliver him from his accusers. | 31For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them. |
