God, whom I praise, do not be silent,1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent,
for the mouths of wicked and deceitful people are opened against me; they speak against me with lying tongues.2for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.
They surround me with hate-filled words, attacking me for no reason.3With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.
Instead of receiving my love, they accuse me, though I continue in prayer.4In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.
They devise evil against me instead of good, and hatred in place of my love.5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.
Appoint an evil person over him; may an accuser stand at his right side. 6Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, may he be found guilty; may his prayer be regarded as sin.7When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him.
May his days be few; may another take over his position. 8May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.
May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow.9May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May his children roam around begging, seeking food while driven far from their ruined homes.10May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.
May creditors seize all his possessions, and may foreigners loot the property he has acquired. 11May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children.12May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children.
May his descendants be eliminated, and their memory be erased from the next generation.13May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation.
May his ancestors' guilt be remembered in the LORD's presence, and may his mother's guilt not be erased.14May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
May what they have done be continually in the LORD's presence; and may their memory be excised from the earth.15May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.
For he didn't think to extend gracious love; he harassed to death the poor, the needy, and the broken hearted. 16For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.
He loved to curse—may his curses return upon him! He took no delight in blessing others — so may blessings be far from him.17He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him.
He wore curses like a garment— may they enter his inner being like water and his bones like oil.18He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil.
May those curses wrap around him like a garment, or like a belt that one always wears.19May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him.
May this be the way the LORD repays my accuser, those who speak evil against me.20May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.
Now you, LORD my God, defend me for your name's sake; because your gracious love is good, deliver me!21But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.
Indeed, I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.22For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
I am fading away like a shadow late in the day; I am shaken off like a locust.23I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.
My knees give way from fasting, and my skin is lean, deprived of oil.24My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.
I have become an object of derision to them— they shake their heads whenever they see me.25I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, LORD my God! Deliver me in accord with your gracious love!26Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love.
Then they will realize that your hand is in this— that you, LORD, have accomplished it.27Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.
They will curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, while your servant rejoices.28While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice.
May my accusers be clothed with shame and wrapped in their humiliation as with a robe.29May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.
I will give many thanks to the LORD with my mouth, praising him publicly,30With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.
for he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to deliver him from his accusers. 31For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.
