| 1Later, Adam had sexual relations with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have given birth to a male child—the LORD." | 1Now the man had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Then she said, "I have created a man just as the LORD did!" |
| 2And she did it again, giving birth to his brother Abel. Abel shepherded flocks and Cain became a farmer. | 2Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel took care of the flocks, while Cain cultivated the ground. |
| 3Later, after a while, Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit that he had harvested, | 3At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD. |
| 4while Abel brought the best parts of some of the firstborn from his flock. The LORD looked favorably upon Abel and his offering, | 4But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock--even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering, |
| 5but he did not look favorably upon Cain and his offering. When Cain became very upset and depressed, | 5but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast. |
| 6the LORD asked Cain, "Why are you so upset? Why are you depressed? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? |
| 7If you do what is appropriate, you'll be accepted, won't you? But if you don't do what is appropriate, sin is crouching near your doorway, turning toward you. Now as for you, will you take dominion over it?" | 7Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it." |
| 8Instead, Cain told his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the wilderness." When they were outside in the fields, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." | 10"What did you do?" God asked. "Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. | 10But the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground! |
| 11Now you're more cursed than the ground, which has opened to receive your brother's blood from your hand. | 11So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12Whenever you work the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you, and you'll wander throughout the earth as a fugitive." | 12When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth." |
| 13"My punishment is too great to bear," Cain told the LORD. | 13Then Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to endure! |
| 14"You're driving me from the soil today. I'll be hidden from you, and I'll wander throughout the earth as a fugitive. In the future, whoever finds me will kill me." | 14Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me." |
| 15The LORD told him, "This won't happen, because whoever kills you will suffer seven times the vengeance." Then the LORD placed a sign on Cain so that no one finding him would kill him. | 15But the LORD said to him, "All right then, if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much." Then the LORD put a special mark on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down. |
| 16After this, Cain left the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
| 17Later, Cain had sexual relations with his wife. She became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. | 23Lamech told his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to what I have to say: You wives of Lamech, hear what I'm announcing! I've killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah! Listen to me! You wives of Lamech, hear my words! I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for hurting me. |
| 24For if Cain is being avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged 77 times." | 24If Cain is to be avenged seven times as much, then Lamech seventy-seven times!" |
| 25Later on, after Adam had sexual relations with his wife, she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, because "God granted me another offspring to replace Abel, since Cain murdered him." | 25And Adam had marital relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth, saying, "God has given me another child in place of Abel because Cain killed him." |
| 26Seth also fathered a son, whom he named Enosh. At that time, profaning the name of the LORD began. | 26And a son was also born to Seth, whom he named Enosh. At that time people began to worship the LORD. |
