International Standard Version | NET Bible |
Now you do not need to have anything written to you about times and dates, brothers, | 1Now on the topic of times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. |
for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. | 2For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come in the same way as a thief in the night. |
When people say, "There is peace and security," destruction will strike them as suddenly as labor pains come to a pregnant woman, and they will not be able to escape. | 3Now when they are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape. |
However, brothers, you are not in the darkness, in order that the Day of the Lord might surprise you like a thief. | 4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would. |
For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness. | 5For you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness. |
Therefore, let's not fall asleep like others do, but let's stay awake and be sober. | 6So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober. |
For people who go to sleep, go to sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night. | 7For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night. |
But since we belong to the day, let's be sober. We must put on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. | 8But since we are of the day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation. |
For God has not destined us to receive wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, | 9For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. |
who died for us in order that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. | 10He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep we will come to life together with him. |
So then, encourage one another and build each other up, as you are doing. | 11Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing. |
Brothers, we ask you to show your appreciation for those who work among you, set an example for you in the Lord, and instruct you. | 12Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who labor among you and preside over you in the Lord and admonish you, |
Hold them in the highest regard, loving them because of their work. Live in peace with each other. | 13and to esteem them most highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. |
We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, cheer up those who are discouraged, and help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. | 14And we urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the undisciplined, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient toward all. |
Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else. | 15See that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. |
Always be joyful. | 16Always rejoice, |
Continually be prayerful. | 17constantly pray, |
In everything be thankful, because this is God's will for you in the Messiah Jesus. | 18in everything give thanks. For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. |
Do not put out the Spirit's fire. | 19Do not extinguish the Spirit. |
Do not despise prophecies. | 20Do not treat prophecies with contempt. |
Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. | 21But examine all things; hold fast to what is good. |
Keep away from every kind of evil. | 22Stay away from every form of evil. |
May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—remain blameless when our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, appears. | 23Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful. | 24He who calls you is trustworthy, and he will in fact do this. |
Brothers, pray for us. | 25Brothers and sisters, pray for us too. |
Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. | 26Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. |
I order you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. | 27I call on you solemnly in the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. |
May the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be with you! Amen. | 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. |
