Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His gracious love exists forever. | 1O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
Let those who have been redeemed by the LORD declare it— those whom he redeemed from the power of the enemy, | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; |
those whom he gathered from other lands— from the east, west, north, and south. | 3And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. |
They wandered in desolate wilderness; they found no road to a city where they could live. | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. |
Hungry and thirsty, their spirits failed. | 5Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 6Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. |
He led them in a straight way to find a city where they could live. | 7And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and his awesome deeds for mankind. | 8Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! |
He has satisfied the one who thirsts, filling the hungry with what is good. | 9For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. |
Some sat in deepest darkness, shackled with cruel iron, | 10Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; |
because they had rebelled against the command of God, despising the advice of the Most High. | 11Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High: |
He humbled them through suffering, as they stumbled without a helper. | 12Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he delivered them from their distress. | 13Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. |
And he brought them out from darkness and the shadow of death, shattering their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds to mankind. | 15Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! |
For he shattered bronze gates and cut through iron bars. | 16For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder. |
Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities. | 17Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. |
They loathed all food, and even reached the gates of death. | 18Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. |
Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, he delivered them from certain destruction. | 19Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. |
He issued his command and healed them; he delivered them from their destruction. | 20He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds for mankind. | 21Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and talk about his works with shouts of joy. | 22And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing. |
Those who go down to the sea in ships, who work in the great waters, | 23They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; |
witnessed the works of the LORD— his awesome deeds in the ocean's depth. | 24These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. |
He spoke and stirred up a windstorm that made its waves surge. | 25For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. |
The people ascended skyward and descended to the depths, their courage melting away in their peril. | 26They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. |
They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, as all their wisdom became useless. | 27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. |
Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, the LORD brought them out of their distress. | 28Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. |
He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down. | 29He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. |
So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven. | 30Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind. | 31Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders. | 32Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. |
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into dry ground, | 33He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; |
and a fruitful land into a salty waste, due to the wickedness of its inhabitants. | 34A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein. |
He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. | 35He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings. |
There he settled the hungry, where they built a city to live in. | 36And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; |
They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a productive harvest. | 37And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. |
Then he blessed them, and they became numerous; he multiplied their cattle. | 38He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. |
But they became few in number, and humiliated by continued oppression, agony, and sorrow. | 39Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. |
Having poured contempt on their nobles, causing them to err aimlessly in the way. | 40He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. |
Yet he lifted the needy from affliction and made them families like a flock. | 41Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. |
The upright see it and rejoice, but the mouth of an evil person is shut. | 42The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. |
Let whoever is wise observe these things, that they may comprehend the gracious love of the LORD. | 43Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD. |
