Holman Christian Standard BibleNET Bible
Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures!
Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe 2Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy,
and has gathered them from the lands-- from the east and the west, from the north and the south. 3and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. 4They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live.
They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. 5They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He rescued them from their distress. 6They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. 7He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. 9For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food.
Others sat in darkness and gloom-- prisoners in cruel chains-- 10They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains,
because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. 11because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king.
He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. 12So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. 13They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. 14He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
For He has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. 16For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars.
Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their sins. 17They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins.
They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. 18They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. 19They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. 20He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy. 22Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done!
Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast waters. 23Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters.
They saw the LORD's works, His wonderful works in the deep. 24They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water.
He spoke and raised a tempest that stirred up the waves of the sea. 25He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea.
Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, 26They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great.
they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was useless. 27They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. 28They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He stilled the storm to a murmur, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 29He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent.
They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for. 30The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders. 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside!
He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, 33He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land,
and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. 34and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants.
He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. 35As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water.
He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. 36He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live.
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. 37They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit.
He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their livestock decrease. 38He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number.
When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, 39As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering.
He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. 40He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road.
But He lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. 41Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep.
The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. 42When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth.
Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. 43Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love!
