Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan to go and drive out nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities fortified to the heavens. | 1Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan so you can dispossess the nations there, people greater and stronger than you who live in large cities with extremely high fortifications. |
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the Anakim. You know about them and you have heard it said about them, 'Who can stand up to the sons of Anak?' | 2They include the Anakites, a numerous and tall people whom you know about and of whom it is said, "Who is able to resist the Anakites?" |
But understand that today the LORD your God will cross over ahead of you as a consuming fire; He will devastate and subdue them before you. You will drive them out and destroy them swiftly, as the LORD has told you. | 3Understand today that the LORD your God who goes before you is a devouring fire; he will defeat and subdue them before you. You will dispossess and destroy them quickly just as he has told you. |
When the LORD your God drives them out before you, do not say to yourself, 'The LORD brought me in to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.' Instead, the LORD will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness. | 4Do not think to yourself after the LORD your God has driven them out before you, "Because of my own righteousness the LORD has brought me here to possess this land." It is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out ahead of you. |
You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the LORD your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to keep the promise He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. | 5It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. |
Understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people." | 6Understand, therefore, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is about to give you this good land as a possession, for you are a stubborn people! |
Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the LORD from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place. | 7Remember--don't ever forget--how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him. |
You provoked the LORD at Horeb, and He was angry enough with you to destroy you. | 8At Horeb you provoked him and he was angry enough with you to destroy you. |
When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights. I did not eat bread or drink water. | 9When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I remained there forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing. |
On the day of the assembly the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by God's finger. The exact words were on them, which the LORD spoke to you from the fire on the mountain. | 10The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God, and on them was everything he said to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that assembly. |
The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant, at the end of the 40 days and 40 nights." | 11Now at the end of the forty days and nights the LORD presented me with the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. |
The LORD said to me, 'Get up and go down immediately from here. For your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast image for themselves.' | 12And he said to me, "Get up, go down at once from here because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have sinned! They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a cast metal image." |
The LORD also said to me, 'I have seen this people, and indeed, they are a stiff-necked people. | 13Moreover, he said to me, "I have taken note of these people; they are a stubborn lot! |
Leave Me alone, and I will destroy them and blot out their name under heaven. Then I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.'" | 14Stand aside and I will destroy them, obliterating their very name from memory, and I will make you into a stronger and more numerous nation than they are." |
So I went back down the mountain, while it was blazing with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. | 15So I turned and went down the mountain while it was blazing with fire; the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. |
I saw how you had sinned against the LORD your God; you had made a calf image for yourselves. You had quickly turned from the way the LORD had commanded for you. | 16When I looked, you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God and had cast for yourselves a metal calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way he had commanded you! |
So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands, shattering them before your eyes. | 17I grabbed the two tablets, threw them down, and shattered them before your very eyes. |
Then I fell down like the first time in the presence of the LORD for 40 days and 40 nights; I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you committed, doing what was evil in the LORD's sight and provoking Him to anger. | 18Then I again fell down before the LORD for forty days and nights; I ate and drank nothing because of all the sin you had committed, doing such evil before the LORD as to enrage him. |
I was afraid of the fierce anger the LORD had directed against you, because He was about to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me on that occasion. | 19For I was terrified at the LORD's intense anger that threatened to destroy you. But he listened to me this time as well. |
The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. But I prayed for Aaron at that time also. | 20The LORD was also angry enough at Aaron to kill him, but at that time I prayed for him too. |
I took the sinful calf you had made, burned it up, and crushed it, thoroughly grinding it to powder as fine as dust. Then I threw it into the stream that came down from the mountain." | 21As for your sinful thing that you had made, the calf, I took it, melted it down, ground it up until it was as fine as dust, and tossed the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain. |
You continued to provoke the LORD at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah. | 22Moreover, you continued to provoke the LORD at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-Hattaavah. |
When the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, He said, 'Go up and possess the land I have given you; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not believe or obey Him. | 23And when he sent you from Kadesh-Barnea and told you, "Go up and possess the land I have given you," you rebelled against the LORD your God and would neither believe nor obey him. |
You have been rebelling against the LORD ever since I have known you." | 24You have been rebelling against him from the very first day I knew you! |
I fell down in the presence of the LORD 40 days and 40 nights because the LORD had threatened to destroy you. | 25I lay flat on the ground before the LORD for forty days and nights, for he had said he would destroy you. |
I prayed to the LORD: Lord GOD, do not annihilate Your people, Your inheritance, whom You redeemed through Your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. | 26I prayed to him: O, Lord GOD, do not destroy your people, your valued property that you have powerfully redeemed, whom you brought out of Egypt by your strength. |
Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Disregard this people's stubbornness, and their wickedness and sin. | 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ignore the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people. |
Otherwise, those in the land you brought us from will say, 'Because the LORD wasn't able to bring them into the land He had promised them, and because He hated them, He brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.' | 28Otherwise the people of the land from which you brought us will say, "The LORD was unable to bring them to the land he promised them, and because of his hatred for them he has brought them out to kill them in the desert." |
But they are Your people, Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your great power and outstretched arm." | 29They are your people, your valued property, whom you brought out with great strength and power. |
