| 2I saw the vision, and as I watched, I was in the fortress city of Susa, in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai Canal. | 2In this vision I saw myself in Susa the citadel, which is located in the province of Elam. In the vision I saw myself at the Ulai Canal. |
| 3I looked up, and there was a ram standing beside the canal. He had two horns. The two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last. | 3I looked up and saw a ram with two horns standing at the canal. Its two horns were both long, but one was longer than the other. The longer one was coming up after the shorter one. |
| 4I saw the ram charging to the west, the north, and the south. No animal could stand against him, and there was no rescue from his power. He did whatever he wanted and became great. | 4I saw that the ram was butting westward, northward, and southward. No animal was able to stand before it, and there was none who could deliver from its power. It did as it pleased and acted arrogantly. |
| 5As I was observing, a male goat appeared, coming from the west across the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. The goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. | 5While I was contemplating all this, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of all the land without touching the ground. This goat had a conspicuous horn between its eyes. |
| 6He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with savage fury. | 6It came to the two-horned ram that I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed against it with raging strength. |
| 7I saw him approaching the ram, and infuriated with him, he struck the ram, shattering his two horns, and the ram was not strong enough to stand against him. The goat threw him to the ground and trampled him, and there was no one to rescue the ram from his power. | 7I saw it approaching the ram. It went into a fit of rage against the ram and struck it and broke off its two horns. The ram had no ability to resist it. The goat hurled the ram to the ground and trampled it. No one could deliver the ram from its power. |
| 8Then the male goat became very great, but when he became powerful, the large horn was shattered. Four conspicuous horns came up in its place, pointing toward the four winds of heaven. | 8The male goat acted even more arrogantly. But no sooner had the large horn become strong than it was broken, and there arose four conspicuous horns in its place, extending toward the four winds of the sky. |
| 9From one of them a little horn emerged and grew extensively toward the south and the east and toward the beautiful land. | 9From one of them came a small horn. But it grew to be very big, toward the south and the east and toward the beautiful land. |
| 10It grew as high as the heavenly host, made some of the stars and some of the host fall to the earth, and trampled them. | 10It grew so big it reached the army of heaven, and it brought about the fall of some of the army and some of the stars to the ground, where it trampled them. |

| 12Because of rebellion, a host, together with the daily sacrifice, will be given over. The horn will throw truth to the ground and will be successful in whatever it does. | 12The army was given over, along with the daily sacrifice, in the course of his sinful rebellion. | 13Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the speaker, "How long will the events of this vision last--the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled?" | 13Then I heard a holy one speaking. | 15While I, Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there stood before me someone who appeared to be a man. | 15While I, Daniel, was watching the vision, I sought to understand it. Now one who appeared to be a man was standing before me. |
| 16I heard a human voice calling from the middle of the Ulai: "Gabriel, explain the vision to this man." | 16Then I heard a human voice coming from between the banks of the Ulai. It called out, "Gabriel, enable this person to understand the vision." |
| 17So he approached where I was standing; when he came near, I was terrified and fell facedown. "Son of man," he said to me, "understand that the vision refers to the time of the end." | 17So he approached the place where I was standing. As he came, I felt terrified and fell flat on the ground. Then he said to me, "Understand, son of man, that the vision pertains to the time of the end." |
| 18While he was speaking to me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me, made me stand up, | 18As he spoke with me, I fell into a trance with my face to the ground. But he touched me and stood me upright. |
| 19and said, "I am here to tell you what will happen at the conclusion of the time of wrath, because it refers to the appointed time of the end. | 19Then he said, "I am going to inform you about what will happen in the latter time of wrath, for the vision pertains to the appointed time of the end. |
| 20The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. | 20The ram that you saw with the two horns stands for the kings of Media and Persia. |
| 21The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece, and the large horn between his eyes represents the first king. | 21The male goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king. |
| 22The four horns that took the place of the shattered horn represent four kingdoms. They will rise from that nation, but without its power. | 22The horn that was broken and in whose place there arose four others stands for four kingdoms that will arise from his nation, though they will not have his strength. |
| 23Near the end of their kingdoms, when the rebels have reached the full measure of their sin, an insolent king, skilled in intrigue, will come to the throne. | 23Toward the end of their rule, when rebellious acts are complete, a rash and deceitful king will arise. |
| 24His power will be great, but it will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. | 25He will cause deceit to prosper through his cunning and by his influence, and in his own mind he will make himself great. He will destroy many in a time of peace; he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be shattered--not by human hands. | 25By his treachery he will succeed through deceit. He will have an arrogant attitude, and he will destroy many who are unaware of his schemes. He will rise up against the Prince of princes, yet he will be broken apart--but not by human agency. |
| 26The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true. Now you must seal up the vision because it refers to many days in the future." | 26The vision of the evenings and mornings that was told to you is correct. But you should seal up the vision, for it refers to a time many days from now." |
| 27I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for days. Then I got up and went about the king's business. I was greatly disturbed by the vision and could not understand it. | 27I, Daniel, was exhausted and sick for days. Then I got up and again carried out the king's business. But I was astonished at the vision, and there was no one to explain it. |
