Then their whole assembly rose up and brought Him before Pilate. | 1And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. |
They began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King." | 2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. |
So Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You have said it." | 3And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. |
Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no grounds for charging this man." | 4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. |
But they kept insisting, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where He started even to here." | 5And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. |
When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean. | 6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. |
Finding that He was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days. | 7And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. |
Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see Him because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by Him. | 8And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. |
So he kept asking Him questions, but Jesus did not answer him. | 9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. |
The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him. | 10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. |
Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt, mocked Him, dressed Him in a brilliant robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. | 11And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. |
That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been hostile toward each other. | 12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves. |
Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, | 13And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, |
and said to them, "You have brought me this man as one who subverts the people. But in fact, after examining Him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse Him of. | 14Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: |
Neither has Herod, because he sent Him back to us. Clearly, He has done nothing to deserve death. | 15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. |
Therefore, I will have Him whipped and then release Him." | 16I will therefore chastise him, and release him. |
For according to the festival he had to release someone to them. | 17(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) |
Then they all cried out together, "Take this man away! Release Barabbas to us!" | 18And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: |
(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.) | 19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) |
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, | 20Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. |
but they kept shouting, "Crucify! Crucify Him!" | 21But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. |
A third time he said to them, "Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have Him whipped and then release Him." | 22And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. |
But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices won out. | 23And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. |
So Pilate decided to grant their demand | 24And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. |
and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will. | 25And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will. |
As they led Him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. | 26And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. |
A large crowd of people followed Him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him. | 27And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. |
But turning to them, Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children. | 28But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. |
Look, the days are coming when they will say, The women without children, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed, are fortunate!' | 29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. |
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us!' and to the hills, Cover us!' | 30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. |
For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?" | 31For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? |
Two others--criminals--were also led away to be executed with Him. | 32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. |
When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. | 33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. |
Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing." And they divided His clothes and cast lots. | 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. |
The people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing: "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God's Messiah, the Chosen One!" | 35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. |
The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine | 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, |
and said, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!" | 37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. |
An inscription was above Him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. | 38And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at Him: "Aren't You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!" | 39And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. |
But the other answered, rebuking him: "Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? | 40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? |
We are punished justly, because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong." | 41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. |
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!" | 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. |
And He said to him, "I assure you: Today you will be with Me in paradise." | 43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. |
It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three, | 44And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. |
because the sun's light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. | 45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. |
And Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit." Saying this, He breathed His last. | 46And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. |
When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, "This man really was righteous!" | 47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. |
All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests. | 48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. |
But all who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. | 49And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. |
There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, | 50And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just: |
who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. | 51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. |
He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. | 52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. |
Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed. | 53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. |
It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. | 54And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. |
The women who had come with Him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how His body was placed. | 55And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. |
Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. | 56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. |
