Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may do these miraculous signs of Mine among them, | 1Then the LORD told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I've hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials in order to perform these signs of mine among them, |
and so that you may tell your son and grandson how severely I dealt with the Egyptians and performed miraculous signs among them, and you will know that I am Yahweh." | 2so you may tell your children and your grandchildren how I toyed with the Egyptians and about my miraculous signs that I performed among them, so all of you may know that I am the LORD. |
So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and told him, "This is what Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may worship Me. | 3Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and told him, "This is what the LORD God of the Hebrews says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so they may serve me. |
But if you refuse to let My people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory. | 4But if you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I'm going to bring locusts into your territory. |
They will cover the surface of the land so that no one will be able to see the land. They will eat the remainder left to you that escaped the hail; they will eat every tree you have growing in the fields. | 5They'll cover the surface of the land so a person cannot see the ground, and they'll eat what is left for you of the residue from the hail. They'll also eat all your trees that grow in the orchards. |
They will fill your houses, all your officials' houses, and the houses of all the Egyptians--something your fathers and ancestors never saw since the time they occupied the land until today." Then he turned and left Pharaoh's presence. | 6Your houses will be filled, along with the houses of all your officials and the houses of all the Egyptians—something that neither your fathers nor your ancestors ever saw from the time they were on earth until now.'" Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh's presence. |
Pharaoh's officials asked him, "How long must this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, so that they may worship Yahweh their God. Don't you realize yet that Egypt is devastated?" | 7Then the officials of Pharaoh told him, "How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go so they may serve the LORD their God! Don't you realize yet that Egypt is about to be destroyed?" |
So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. "Go, worship Yahweh your God," Pharaoh said. "But exactly who will be going?" | 8Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh and he told them, "Go, serve the LORD your God. But exactly who will go?" |
Moses replied, "We will go with our young and our old; we will go with our sons and daughters and with our flocks and herds because we must hold Yahweh's festival." | 9Moses said, "We will go with our young and with our old. We will go with our sons and our daughters, with our sheep and our cattle, because it's a festival to the LORD for us." |
He said to them, "May Yahweh be with you if I ever let you and your families go! Look out--you are planning evil. | 10Then Pharaoh told them, "The LORD will certainly be with you if I let you and your little ones go. I know some evil plan is in your mind. |
No, only the men may go and worship Yahweh, for that is what you have been asking for." And they were driven from Pharaoh's presence. | 11No! Let the men go and serve the LORD, for that is what you were seeking." Then they were driven out from the presence of Pharaoh. |
The LORD then said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt and the locusts will come up over it and eat every plant in the land, everything that the hail left." | 12The LORD told Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt to bring the locusts, and they'll come up over the land of Egypt and eat all the vegetation of the land, everything that the hail left." |
So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD sent an east wind over the land all that day and through the night. By morning the east wind had brought in the locusts. | 13Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD sent an east wind into the land all that day and throughout the night. When morning came, the east wind brought the locusts. |
The locusts went up over the entire land of Egypt and settled on the whole territory of Egypt. Never before had there been such a large number of locusts, and there never will be again. | 14The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled on all the territory of Egypt in great swarms. There had never been locusts like this before nor would there ever be again. |
They covered the surface of the whole land so that the land was black, and they consumed all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on the trees or the plants in the field throughout the land of Egypt. | 15They covered the surface of the entire land so that it was dark. They ate all the vegetation of the land and the fruit from the trees that the hail left. Nothing green was left on the trees or on the vegetation in all the land of Egypt. |
Pharaoh urgently sent for Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against Yahweh your God and against you. | 16Pharaoh quickly called Moses and Aaron and said, "I've sinned against the LORD your God and against you. |
Please forgive my sin once more and make an appeal to Yahweh your God, so that He will take this death away from me." | 17Now, please forgive my sin only this time, and pray to the LORD your God that he would at least remove this from me." |
Moses left Pharaoh's presence and appealed to the LORD. | 18Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD. |
Then the LORD changed the wind to a strong west wind, and it carried off the locusts and blew them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. | 19Then the LORD brought a very strong west wind that took the locusts and drove them into the Reed Sea. Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites go. | 20But the LORD made Pharaoh's heart stubborn and he would not let the Israelis go. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt." | 21Then the LORD told Moses, "Stretch your hand toward the sky and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that one can feel." |
So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days. | 22So Moses stretched his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. |
One person could not see another, and for three days they did not move from where they were. Yet all the Israelites had light where they lived. | 23No one could see anyone else, nor could anyone get up from his place for three days. But there was light for all the Israelis in their dwellings. |
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, "Go, worship Yahweh. Even your families may go with you; only your flocks and herds must stay behind." | 24Pharaoh called Moses and said, "Go serve the LORD, but your flocks and your cattle are to remain. Even your little ones can go with you!" |
Moses responded, "You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings to prepare for Yahweh our God. | 25Moses said, "You must let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings to offer to the LORD our God. |
Even our livestock must go with us; not a hoof will be left behind because we will take some of them to worship Yahweh our God. We will not know what we will use to worship Yahweh until we get there." | 26And even our livestock must go with us. Not a hoof will be left behind because we will use some of them to serve the LORD our God, and until we get there we won't know what we need to serve the LORD." |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was unwilling to let them go. | 27The LORD made Pharaoh's heart stubborn, and he did not want to let them go. |
Pharaoh said to him, "Leave me! Make sure you never see my face again, for on the day you see my face, you will die."" | 28Then Pharaoh told him, "Get away from me! Watch out that you never see my face again, because on the day you see my face, you will die!" |
As you have said," Moses replied, "I will never see your face again." | 29Moses said, "Just as you have said, I won't see your face again!" |
