O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! | 1A song. A psalm of Asaph. O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. |
For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. | 2See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. |
They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. | 3With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. |
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” | 4"Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel's name is remembered no more." |
For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant— | 5With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you-- |
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, | 6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, |
Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; | 7Byblos, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre. |
Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah | 8Even Assyria has joined them to reinforce Lot's descendants. |
Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, | 9Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, |
who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground. | 10who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground. |
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.” | 12who said, "Let us take possession of the pasturelands of God." |
O my God, make them like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind. | 13Make them like tumbleweed, my God, like chaff before the wind. |
As fire consumes the forest, as the flame sets the mountains ablaze, | 14As fire consumes the forest or a flame sets the mountains ablaze, |
so may you pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your hurricane! | 15so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. |
Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame, LORD, so that they will seek your name. |
Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, | 17May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; may they perish in disgrace. |
that they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth. | 18Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD-- that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. |
