O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! | 1A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! Do not be inactive, O God! |
For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. | 2For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. |
They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. | 3They carefully plot against your people, and make plans to harm the ones you cherish. |
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” | 4They say, "Come on, let's annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more." |
For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant— | 5Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you. |
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, | 6It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, |
Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; | 7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre. |
Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah | 8Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot. (Selah) |
Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, | 9Do to them as you did to Midian--as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River! |
who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground. | 10They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground. |
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.” | 12who said, "Let's take over the pastures of God!" |
O my God, make them like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind. | 13O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind! |
As fire consumes the forest, as the flame sets the mountains ablaze, | 14Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides, |
so may you pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your hurricane! | 15chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm. |
Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD. |
Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, | 17May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame! |
that they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth. | 18Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth. |
