Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them, | 1The LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, in order to display these signs of mine before him, |
and that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the LORD.” | 2and in order that in the hearing of your son and your grandson you may tell how I made fools of the Egyptians and about my signs that I displayed among them, so that you may know that I am the LORD." |
So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me. | 3So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and told him, "Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: 'How long do you refuse to humble yourself before me? Release my people so that they may serve me! |
For if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, | 4But if you refuse to release my people, I am going to bring locusts into your territory tomorrow. |
and they shall cover the face of the land, so that no one can see the land. And they shall eat what is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field, | 5They will cover the surface of the earth, so that you will be unable to see the ground. They will eat the remainder of what escaped--what is left over for you--from the hail, and they will eat every tree that grows for you from the field. |
and they shall fill your houses and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.’” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh. | 6They will fill your houses, the houses of your servants, and all the houses of Egypt, such as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen since they have been in the land until this day!'" Then Moses turned and went out from Pharaoh. |
Then Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?” | 7Pharaoh's servants said to him, "How long will this man be a menace to us? Release the people so that they may serve the LORD their God. Do you not know that Egypt is destroyed?" |
So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. And he said to them, “Go, serve the LORD your God. But which ones are to go?” | 8So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, "Go, serve the LORD your God. Exactly who is going with you?" |
Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old. We will go with our sons and daughters and with our flocks and herds, for we must hold a feast to the LORD.” | 9Moses said, "We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our sheep and our cattle we will go, because we are to hold a pilgrim feast for the LORD." |
But he said to them, “The LORD be with you, if ever I let you and your little ones go! Look, you have some evil purpose in mind. | 10He said to them, "The LORD will need to be with you if I release you and your dependents! Watch out! Trouble is right in front of you! |
No! Go, the men among you, and serve the LORD, for that is what you are asking.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence. | 11No! Go, you men only, and serve the LORD, for that is what you want." Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh's presence. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, so that they may come upon the land of Egypt and eat every plant in the land, all that the hail has left.” | 12The LORD said to Moses, "Extend your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up over the land of Egypt and eat everything that grows in the ground, everything that the hail has left." |
So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind had brought the locusts. | 13So Moses extended his staff over the land of Egypt, and then the LORD brought an east wind on the land all that day and all night. The morning came, and the east wind had brought up the locusts! |
The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever will be again. | 14The locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and settled down in all the territory of Egypt. It was very severe; there had been no locusts like them before, nor will there be such ever again. |
They covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt. | 15They covered the surface of all the ground, so that the ground became dark with them, and they ate all the vegetation of the ground and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green remained on the trees or on anything that grew in the fields throughout the whole land of Egypt. |
Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you. | 16Then Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you! |
Now therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and plead with the LORD your God only to remove this death from me.” | 17So now, forgive my sin this time only, and pray to the LORD your God that he would only take this death away from me." |
So he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the LORD. | 18Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, |
And the LORD turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. | 19and the LORD turned a very strong west wind, and it picked up the locusts and blew them into the Red Sea. Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go. | 20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not release the Israelites. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.” | 21The LORD said to Moses, "Extend your hand toward heaven so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness so thick it can be felt." |
So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. | 22So Moses extended his hand toward heaven, and there was absolute darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days. |
They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the people of Israel had light where they lived. | 23No one could see another person, and no one could rise from his place for three days. But the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. |
Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Go, serve the LORD; your little ones also may go with you; only let your flocks and your herds remain behind.” | 24Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, "Go, serve the LORD--only your flocks and herds will be detained. Even your families may go with you." |
But Moses said, “You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. | 25But Moses said, "Will you also provide us with sacrifices and burnt offerings that we may present them to the LORD our God? |
Our livestock also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the LORD our God, and we do not know with what we must serve the LORD until we arrive there.” | 26Our livestock must also go with us! Not a hoof is to be left behind! For we must take these animals to serve the LORD our God. Until we arrive there, we do not know what we must use to serve the LORD." |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. | 27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was not willing to release them. |
Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me; take care never to see my face again, for on the day you see my face you shall die.” | 28Pharaoh said to him, "Go from me! Watch out for yourself! Do not appear before me again, for when you see my face you will die!" |
Moses said, “As you say! I will not see your face again.” | 29Moses said, "As you wish! I will not see your face again." |
