| 15Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. | 15To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will. |
| 16The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. | 16These preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; |
| 17The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. | 17the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment. |
| 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, | 18What does it matter? | 19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, | 19because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. |
| 20as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. |
| 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. | 21For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. |

Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel, |
| 28and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. | 28not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your salvation--and this is from God. |
| 29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, | 29For it has been granted to you on Christ's behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, |
| 30engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. | 30since you are engaged in the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I have. |
