Woe to those who dream up wickedness and prepare evil plans on their beds! At morning light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands. | 1What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night, thinking up evil plans. You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out, simply because you have the power to do so. |
They covet fields and seize them; they also take houses. They deprive a man of his home, a person of his inheritance. | 2When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance. |
Therefore, the LORD says: I am now planning a disaster against this nation; you cannot free your necks from it. Then you will not walk so proudly because it will be an evil time. | 3But this is what the LORD says: “I will reward your evil with evil; you won’t be able to pull your neck out of the noose. You will no longer walk around proudly, for it will be a terrible time.” |
In that day one will take up a taunt against you and lament mournfully, saying, "We are totally ruined! He measures out the allotted land of my people. How he removes it from me! He allots our fields to traitors." | 4In that day your enemies will make fun of you by singing this song of despair about you: “We are finished, completely ruined! God has confiscated our land, taking it from us. He has given our fields to those who betrayed us. ” |
Therefore, there will be no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by casting lots. | 5Others will set your boundaries then, and the LORD’s people will have no say in how the land is divided. True and False Prophets |
"Quit your preaching," they preach. "They should not preach these things; shame will not overtake us." | 6“Don’t say such things,” the people respond. “Don’t prophesy like that. Such disasters will never come our way!” |
House of Jacob, should it be asked, "Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things he does?" Don't my words bring good to the one who walks uprightly? | 7Should you talk that way, O family of Israel? Will the LORD’s Spirit have patience with such behavior? If you would do what is right, you would find my words comforting. |
But recently my people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid robe from those who are passing through confidently, like those returning from war. | 8Yet to this very hour my people rise against me like an enemy! You steal the shirts right off the backs of those who trusted you, making them as ragged as men returning from battle. |
You force the women of my people out of their comfortable homes, and you take my blessing from their children forever. | 9You have evicted women from their pleasant homes and forever stripped their children of all that God would give them. |
Get up and leave, for this is not your place of rest because defilement brings destruction--a grievous destruction! | 10Up! Begone! This is no longer your land and home, for you have filled it with sin and ruined it completely. |
If a man comes and utters empty lies--"I will preach to you about wine and beer"--he would be just the preacher for this people! | 11Suppose a prophet full of lies would say to you, “I’ll preach to you the joys of wine and alcohol!” That’s just the kind of prophet you would like! Hope for Restoration |
I will indeed gather all of you, Jacob; I will collect the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the middle of its pasture. It will be noisy with people. | 12“Someday, O Israel, I will gather you; I will gather the remnant who are left. I will bring you together again like sheep in a pen, like a flock in its pasture. Yes, your land will again be filled with noisy crowds! |
One who breaks open the way will advance before them; they will break out, pass through the city gate, and leave by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader. | 13Your leader will break out and lead you out of exile, out through the gates of the enemy cities, back to your own land. Your king will lead you; the LORD himself will guide you.” |
