Woe to those who dream up wickedness and prepare evil plans on their beds! At morning light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands. | 1Those who devise sinful plans are as good as dead, those who dream about doing evil as they lie in bed. As soon as morning dawns they carry out their plans, because they have the power to do so. |
They covet fields and seize them; they also take houses. They deprive a man of his home, a person of his inheritance. | 2They confiscate the fields they desire, and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes, and deprive people of the land they have inherited. |
Therefore, the LORD says: I am now planning a disaster against this nation; you cannot free your necks from it. Then you will not walk so proudly because it will be an evil time. | 3Therefore the LORD says this: "Look, I am devising disaster for this nation! It will be like a yoke from which you cannot free your neck. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of catastrophe. |
In that day one will take up a taunt against you and lament mournfully, saying, "We are totally ruined! He measures out the allotted land of my people. How he removes it from me! He allots our fields to traitors." | 4In that day people will sing this taunt song to you--they will mock you with this lament: 'We are completely destroyed; they sell off the property of my people. How they remove it from me! They assign our fields to the conqueror.' |
Therefore, there will be no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by casting lots. | 5Therefore no one will assign you land in the LORD's community. |
"Quit your preaching," they preach. "They should not preach these things; shame will not overtake us." | 6Don't preach with such impassioned rhetoric,' they say excitedly. 'These prophets should not preach of such things; we will not be overtaken by humiliation.' |
House of Jacob, should it be asked, "Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things he does?" Don't my words bring good to the one who walks uprightly? | 7Does the family of Jacob say, 'The LORD's patience can't be exhausted--he would never do such things'? To be sure, my commands bring a reward for those who obey them, |
But recently my people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid robe from those who are passing through confidently, like those returning from war. | 8but you rise up as an enemy against my people. You steal a robe from a friend, from those who pass by peacefully as if returning from a war. |
You force the women of my people out of their comfortable homes, and you take my blessing from their children forever. | 9You wrongly evict widows among my people from their cherished homes. You defraud their children of their prized inheritance. |
Get up and leave, for this is not your place of rest because defilement brings destruction--a grievous destruction! | 10But you are the ones who will be forced to leave! For this land is not secure! Sin will thoroughly destroy it! |
If a man comes and utters empty lies--"I will preach to you about wine and beer"--he would be just the preacher for this people! | 11If a lying windbag should come and say, 'I'll promise you blessings of wine and beer,' he would be just the right preacher for these people! |
I will indeed gather all of you, Jacob; I will collect the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the middle of its pasture. It will be noisy with people. | 12I will certainly gather all of you, O Jacob, I will certainly assemble those Israelites who remain. I will bring them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in the middle of a pasture; they will be so numerous that they will make a lot of noise. |
One who breaks open the way will advance before them; they will break out, pass through the city gate, and leave by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader. | 13The one who can break through barriers will lead them out they will break out, pass through the gate, and leave. Their king will advance before them, The LORD himself will lead them. |
