Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may do these miraculous signs of mine among them, | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them |
and so that you may tell your son and grandson how severely I dealt with the Egyptians and performed miraculous signs among them, and you will know that I am the LORD." | 2that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the LORD." |
So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and told him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may worship me. | 3So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. |
But if you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory. | 4If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. |
They will cover the surface of the land so that no one will be able to see the land. They will eat the remainder left to you that escaped the hail; they will eat every tree you have growing in the fields. | 5They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. |
They will fill your houses, all your officials' houses, and the houses of all the Egyptians--something your fathers and grandfathers never saw since the time they occupied the land until today." Then he turned and left Pharaoh's presence. | 6They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians--something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.'" Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh. |
Pharaoh's officials asked him, "How long must this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, so that they may worship the LORD their God. Don't you realize yet that Egypt is devastated?" | 7Pharaoh's officials said to him, "How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the LORD their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?" |
So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. "Go, worship the LORD your God," Pharaoh said. "But exactly who will be going?" | 8Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. "Go, worship the LORD your God," he said. "But tell me who will be going." |
Moses replied, "We will go with our young and with our old; we will go with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds because we must hold the LORD's festival." | 9Moses answered, "We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the LORD." |
He said to them, "The Lord would have to be with you if I would ever let you and your families go! Look out--you're heading for trouble. | 10Pharaoh said, "The LORD be with you--if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil. |
No, go--just able-bodied men--worship the LORD, since that's what you want." And they were driven from Pharaoh's presence. | 11No! Have only the men go and worship the LORD, since that's what you have been asking for." Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh's presence. |
The LORD then said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, and the locusts will come up over it and eat every plant in the land, everything that the hail left." | 12And the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail." |
So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the LORD sent an east wind over the land all that day and through the night. By morning the east wind had brought in the locusts. | 13So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the LORD made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; |
The locusts went up over the entire land of Egypt and settled on the whole territory of Egypt. Never before had there been such a large number of locusts, and there never will be again. | 14they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. |
They covered the surface of the whole land so that the land was black, and they consumed all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on the trees or the plants in the field throughout the land of Egypt. | 15They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail--everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt. |
Pharaoh urgently sent for Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you. | 16Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you. |
Please forgive my sin once more and make an appeal to the LORD your God, so that he will just take this death away from me." | 17Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the LORD your God to take this deadly plague away from me." |
Moses left Pharaoh's presence and appealed to the LORD. | 18Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD. |
Then the LORD changed the wind to a strong west wind, and it carried off the locusts and blew them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. | 19And the LORD changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea. Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites go. | 20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let the Israelites go. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be felt." | 21Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt--darkness that can be felt." |
So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days. | 22So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. |
One person could not see another, and for three days they did not move from where they were. Yet all the Israelites had light where they lived. | 23No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. |
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, "Go, worship the LORD. Even your families may go with you; only your flocks and herds must stay behind." | 24Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, "Go, worship the LORD. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind." |
Moses responded, "You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings to prepare for the LORD our God. | 25But Moses said, "You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the LORD our God. |
Even our livestock must go with us; not a hoof will be left behind because we will take some of them to worship the LORD our God. We will not know what we will use to worship the LORD until we get there." | 26Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the LORD our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the LORD." |
But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was unwilling to let them go. | 27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he was not willing to let them go. |
Pharaoh said to him, "Leave me! Make sure you never see my face again, for on the day you see my face, you will die." | 28Pharaoh said to Moses, "Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die." |
"As you have said," Moses replied, "I will never see your face again." | 29"Just as you say," Moses replied. "I will never appear before you again." |
