These are the words of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.1These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen with your own eyes everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land.2Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land.
You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.3With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders.
Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.4But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.
I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;5Yet the LORD says, "During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.
you did not eat food or drink wine or beer--so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.6You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God."
When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.7When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.8We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Therefore, observe the words of this covenant and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.9Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.
"All of you are standing today before the LORD your God--your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel,10All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God--your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel,
your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water--11together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.
so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath12You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath,
and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.13to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you,14I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you
but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not here today.15who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today.
"Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled.16You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here.
You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.17You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.
Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.18Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.
When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt, thinking, 'I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.' This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land.19When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way," they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
The LORD will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The LORD will blot out his name under heaven,20The LORD will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the LORD will blot out their names from under heaven.
and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.21The LORD will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
"Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the LORD has inflicted on it.22Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it.
All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD demolished in his fierce anger.23The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger.
All the nations will ask, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?'24All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?"
Then people will answer, 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.25And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.
They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known--gods that the LORD had not permitted them to worship.26They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them.
Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it.27Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.
The LORD uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.'28In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now."
The hidden things belong to the LORD our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.29The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
