Woe to the city that is rebellious and defiled, the oppressive city! | 1Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! |
She has not obeyed; she has not accepted discipline. She has not trusted in the LORD; she has not drawn near to her God. | 2She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God. |
The princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are wolves of the night, which leave nothing for the morning. | 3Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow. |
Her prophets are reckless--treacherous men. Her priests profane the sanctuary; they do violence to instruction. | 4Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. |
The righteous LORD is in her; he does no wrong. He applies his justice morning by morning; he does not fail at dawn, yet the one who does wrong knows no shame. | 5The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame. |
I have cut off nations; their corner towers are destroyed. I have laid waste their streets, with no one to pass through. Their cities lie devastated, without a person, without an inhabitant. | 6I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant. |
I thought: You will certainly fear me and accept correction. Then her dwelling place would not be cut off based on all that I had allocated to her. However, they became more corrupt in all their actions. | 7I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings. |
Therefore, wait for me--this is the LORD's declaration--until the day I rise up for plunder. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, in order to pour out my indignation on them, all my burning anger; for the whole earth will be consumed by the fire of my jealousy. | 8Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. |
For I will then restore pure speech to the peoples so that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him with a single purpose. | 9For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent. |
From beyond the rivers of Cush my supplicants, my dispersed people, will bring an offering to me. | 10From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering. |
On that day you will not be put to shame because of everything you have done in rebelling against me. For then I will remove from among you your jubilant, arrogant people, and you will never again be haughty on my holy mountain. | 11In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain. |
I will leave a meek and humble people among you, and they will take refuge in the name of the LORD. | 12I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD. |
The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or tell lies; a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will pasture and lie down, with nothing to make them afraid. | 13The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. |
Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; shout loudly, Israel! Be glad and celebrate with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! | 14Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. |
The LORD has removed your punishment; he has turned back your enemy. The King of Israel, the LORD, is among you; you need no longer fear harm. | 15The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more. |
On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: "Do not fear; Zion, do not let your hands grow weak. | 16In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack. |
The LORD your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing." | 17The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. |
I will gather those who have been driven from the appointed festivals; they will be a tribute from you and a reproach on her. | 18I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden. |
Yes, at that time I will deal with all who oppress you. I will save the lame and gather the outcasts; I will make those who were disgraced throughout the earth receive praise and fame. | 19Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame. |
At that time I will bring you back, yes, at the time I will gather you. I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes. The LORD has spoken. | 20At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD. |
