1Now the allotment for the tribe of the descendants of Judah by their clans was in the southernmost region, south to the Wilderness of Zin and over to the border of Edom.

1וַיְהִ֣י הַגּוֹרָ֗ל לְמַטֵּ֛ה בְּנֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם אֶל־ גְּב֨וּל אֱד֧וֹם מִדְבַּר־ צִ֛ן נֶ֖גְבָּה מִקְצֵ֥ה תֵימָֽן׃

2Their southern border began at the tip of the Dead Sea on the south bay

2וַיְהִ֤י לָהֶם֙ גְּב֣וּל נֶ֔גֶב מִקְצֵ֖ה יָ֣ם הַמֶּ֑לַח מִן־ הַלָּשֹׁ֖ן הַפֹּנֶ֥ה נֶֽגְבָּה׃

3and went south of the Scorpions' Ascent, proceeded to Zin, ascended to the south of Kadesh-barnea, passed Hezron, ascended to Addar, and turned to Karka.

3וְ֠יָצָא אֶל־ מִנֶּ֜גֶב לְמַעֲלֵ֤ה עַקְרַבִּים֙ וְעָ֣בַר צִ֔נָה וְעָלָ֥ה מִנֶּ֖גֶב לְקָדֵ֣שׁ בַּרְנֵ֑עַ וְעָבַ֤ר חֶצְרוֹן֙ וְעָלָ֣ה אַדָּ֔רָה וְנָסַ֖ב הַקַּרְקָֽעָה׃

4It proceeded to Azmon and to the Brook of Egypt and so the border ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This is your southern border.

4וְעָבַ֣ר עַצְמ֗וֹנָה וְיָצָא֙ נַ֣חַל מִצְרַ֔יִם [והיה] (וְהָי֛וּ) תֹּצְא֥וֹת הַגְּב֖וּל יָ֑מָּה זֶה־ יִהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם גְּב֥וּל נֶֽגֶב׃

5Now the eastern border was along the Dead Sea to the mouth of the Jordan. The border on the north side was from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan.

5וּגְב֥וּל קֵ֙דְמָה֙ יָ֣ם הַמֶּ֔לַח עַד־ קְצֵ֖ה הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וּגְב֞וּל לִפְאַ֤ת צָפ֙וֹנָה֙ מִלְּשׁ֣וֹן הַיָּ֔ם מִקְצֵ֖ה הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

6It ascended to Beth-hoglah, proceeded north of Beth-arabah, and ascended to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.

6וְעָלָ֤ה הַגְּבוּל֙ בֵּ֣ית חָגְלָ֔ה וְעָבַ֕ר מִצְּפ֖וֹן לְבֵ֣ית הָעֲרָבָ֑ה וְעָלָ֣ה הַגְּב֔וּל אֶ֥בֶן בֹּ֖הַן בֶּן־ רְאוּבֵֽן׃

7Then the border ascended to Debir from the Valley of Achor, turning north to the Gilgal that is opposite the Ascent of Adummim, which is south of the ravine. The border proceeded to the Waters of En-shemesh and ended at En-rogel.

7וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֥וּל ׀ דְּבִרָה֮ מֵעֵ֣מֶק עָכוֹר֒ וְצָפ֜וֹנָה פֹּנֶ֣ה אֶל־ הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל אֲשֶׁר־ נֹ֙כַח֙ לְמַעֲלֵ֣ה אֲדֻמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מִנֶּ֖גֶב לַנָּ֑חַל וְעָבַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ אֶל־ מֵי־ עֵ֣ין שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ וְהָי֥וּ תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו אֶל־ עֵ֥ין רֹגֵֽל׃

8From there the border ascended Ben Hinnom Valley to the southern Jebusite slope (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that faces Hinnom Valley on the west, at the northern end of Rephaim Valley.

8וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֜וּל גֵּ֣י בֶן־ הִנֹּ֗ם אֶל־ כֶּ֤תֶף הַיְבוּסִי֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶב הִ֖יא יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֗ר אֲ֠שֶׁר עַל־ פְּנֵ֤י גֵֽי־ הִנֹּם֙ יָ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּקְצֵ֥ה עֵֽמֶק־ רְפָאִ֖ים צָפֹֽנָה׃

9From the top of the hill the border curved to the spring of the Waters of Nephtoah, went to the cities of Mount Ephron, and then curved to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim).

9וְתָאַ֨ר הַגְּב֜וּל מֵרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֗ר אֶל־ מַעְיַן֙ מֵ֣י נֶפְתּ֔וֹחַ וְיָצָ֖א אֶל־ עָרֵ֣י הַר־ עֶפְר֑וֹן וְתָאַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ בַּעֲלָ֔ה הִ֖יא קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים׃

10The border turned westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, went to the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), descended to Beth-shemesh, and proceeded to Timnah.

10וְנָסַב֩ הַגְּב֨וּל מִבַּעֲלָ֥ה יָ֙מָּה֙ אֶל־ הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר וְעָבַ֕ר אֶל־ כֶּ֧תֶף הַר־ יְעָרִ֛ים מִצָּפ֖וֹנָה הִ֣יא כְסָל֑וֹן וְיָרַ֥ד בֵּֽית־ שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ וְעָבַ֥ר תִּמְנָֽה׃

11Then the border reached to the slope north of Ekron, curved to Shikkeron, proceeded to Mount Baalah, went to Jabneel, and ended at the Mediterranean Sea.

11וְיָצָ֨א הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־ כֶּ֣תֶף עֶקְרוֹן֮ צָפוֹנָה֒ וְתָאַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ שִׁכְּר֔וֹנָה וְעָבַ֥ר הַר־ הַֽבַּעֲלָ֖ה וְיָצָ֣א יַבְנְאֵ֑ל וְהָי֛וּ תֹּצְא֥וֹת הַגְּב֖וּל יָֽמָּה׃

12Now the western border was the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. This was the boundary of the descendants of Judah around their clans.

12וּגְב֣וּל יָ֔ם הַיָּ֥מָּה הַגָּד֖וֹל וּגְב֑וּל זֶ֠ה גְּב֧וּל בְּנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֛ה סָבִ֖יב לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃

13He gave Caleb son of Jephunneh the following portion among the descendants of Judah based on the LORD's instruction to Joshua: Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak).

13וּלְכָלֵ֣ב בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֗ה נָ֤תַן חֵ֙לֶק֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ בְּנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶל־ פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ אֶת־ קִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע אֲבִ֥י הָעֲנָ֖ק הִ֥יא חֶבְרֽוֹן׃

14Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak.

14וַיֹּ֤רֶשׁ מִשָּׁם֙ כָּלֵ֔ב אֶת־ שְׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י הָעֲנָ֑ק אֶת־ שֵׁשַׁ֤י וְאֶת־ אֲחִימַן֙ וְאֶת־ תַּלְמַ֔י יְלִידֵ֖י הָעֲנָֽק׃

15From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir, which used to be called Kiriath-sepher,

15וַיַּ֣עַל מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֖י דְּבִ֑ר וְשֵׁם־ דְּבִ֥ר לְפָנִ֖ים קִרְיַת־ סֵֽפֶר׃

16and Caleb said, "Whoever attacks and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter Achsah to him as a wife."

16וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כָּלֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר־ יַכֶּ֥ה אֶת־ קִרְיַת־ סֵ֖פֶר וּלְכָדָ֑הּ וְנָתַ֥תִּי ל֛וֹ אֶת־ עַכְסָ֥ה בִתִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

17So Othniel son of Caleb's brother, Kenaz, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as a wife.

17וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֛הּ עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־ קְנַ֖ז אֲחִ֣י כָלֵ֑ב וַיִּתֶּן־ ל֛וֹ אֶת־ עַכְסָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

18When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?"

18וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ וַתְּסִיתֵ֙הוּ֙ לִשְׁא֤וֹל מֵֽאֵת־ אָבִ֙יהָ֙ שָׂדֶ֔ה וַתִּצְנַ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל הַחֲמ֑וֹר וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ לָ֥הּ כָּלֵ֖ב מַה־ לָּֽךְ׃

19She replied, "Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me the springs also." So he gave her the upper and lower springs.

19וַתֹּ֜אמֶר תְּנָה־ לִּ֣י בְרָכָ֗ה כִּ֣י אֶ֤רֶץ הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ נְתַתָּ֔נִי וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לִ֖י גֻּלֹּ֣ת מָ֑יִם וַיִּתֶּן־ לָ֗הּ אֵ֚ת גֻּלֹּ֣ת עִלִּיּ֔וֹת וְאֵ֖ת גֻּלֹּ֥ת תַּחְתִּיּֽוֹת׃ פ

20This was the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Judah by their clans.

20זֹ֗את נַחֲלַ֛ת מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־ יְהוּדָ֖ה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃

21These were the outermost cities of the tribe of the descendants of Judah toward the border of Edom in the Negev: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

21וַיִּֽהְי֣וּ הֶעָרִ֗ים מִקְצֵה֙ לְמַטֵּ֣ה בְנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶל־ גְּב֥וּל אֱד֖וֹם בַּנֶּ֑גְבָּה קַבְצְאֵ֥ל וְעֵ֖דֶר וְיָגֽוּר׃

22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

22וְקִינָ֥ה וְדִֽימוֹנָ֖ה וְעַדְעָדָֽה׃

23Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan,

23וְקֶ֥דֶשׁ וְחָצ֖וֹר וְיִתְנָֽן׃

24Ziph, Telem, Bealoth,

24זִ֥יף וָטֶ֖לֶם וּבְעָלֽוֹת׃

25Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron (that is, Hazor),

25וְחָצ֤וֹר ׀ חֲדַתָּה֙ וּקְרִיּ֔וֹת חֶצְר֖וֹן הִ֥יא חָצֽוֹר׃

26Amam, Shema, Moladah,

26אֲמָ֥ם וּשְׁמַ֖ע וּמוֹלָדָֽה׃

27Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet,

27וַחֲצַ֥ר גַּדָּ֛ה וְחֶשְׁמ֖וֹן וּבֵ֥ית פָּֽלֶט׃

28Hazar-shual, Beer-sheba, Biziothiah,

28וַחֲצַ֥ר שׁוּעָ֛ל וּבְאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֖בַע וּבִזְיוֹתְיָֽה׃

29Baalah, Iim, Ezem,

29בַּעֲלָ֥ה וְעִיִּ֖ים וָעָֽצֶם׃

30Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah,

30וְאֶלְתּוֹלַ֥ד וּכְסִ֖יל וְחָרְמָֽה׃

31Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,

31וְצִֽקְלַ֥ג וּמַדְמַנָּ֖ה וְסַנְסַנָּֽה׃

32Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon--twenty-nine cities in all, with their settlements.

32וּלְבָא֥וֹת וְשִׁלְחִ֖ים וְעַ֣יִן וְרִמּ֑וֹן כָּל־ עָרִ֛ים עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וָתֵ֖שַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ ס

33In the Judean foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah,

33בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֑ה אֶשְׁתָּא֥וֹל וְצָרְעָ֖ה וְאַשְׁנָֽה׃

34Zanoah, En-gannim, Tappuah, Enam,

34וְזָנ֙וֹחַ֙ וְעֵ֣ין גַּנִּ֔ים תַּפּ֖וּחַ וְהָעֵינָֽם׃

35Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah,

35יַרְמוּת֙ וַעֲדֻלָּ֔ם שׂוֹכֹ֖ה וַעֲזֵקָֽה׃

36Shaaraim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim--fourteen cities, with their settlements;

36וְשַׁעֲרַ֙יִם֙ וַעֲדִיתַ֔יִם וְהַגְּדֵרָ֖ה וּגְדֵרֹתָ֑יִם עָרִ֥ים אַרְבַּֽע־ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

37Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-gad,

37צְנָ֥ן וַחֲדָשָׁ֖ה וּמִגְדַּל־ גָּֽד׃

38Dilan, Mizpeh, Jokthe-el,

38וְדִלְעָ֥ן וְהַמִּצְפֶּ֖ה וְיָקְתְאֵֽל׃

39Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon,

39לָכִ֥ישׁ וּבָצְקַ֖ת וְעֶגְלֽוֹן׃

40Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish,

40וְכַבּ֥וֹן וְלַחְמָ֖ס וְכִתְלִֽישׁ׃

41Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah--sixteen cities, with their settlements;

41וּגְדֵר֕וֹת בֵּית־ דָּג֥וֹן וְנַעֲמָ֖ה וּמַקֵּדָ֑ה עָרִ֥ים שֵׁשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ ס

42Libnah, Ether, Ashan,

42לִבְנָ֥ה וָעֶ֖תֶר וְעָשָֽׁן׃

43Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib,

43וְיִפְתָּ֥ח וְאַשְׁנָ֖ה וּנְצִֽיב׃

44Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah--nine cities, with their settlements;

44וּקְעִילָ֥ה וְאַכְזִ֖יב וּמָֽרֵאשָׁ֑ה עָרִ֥ים תֵּ֖שַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

45Ekron, with its surrounding villages and settlements;

45עֶקְר֥וֹן וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ וַחֲצֵרֶֽיהָ׃

46from Ekron to the sea, all the cities near Ashdod, with their settlements;

46מֵעֶקְר֖וֹן וָיָ֑מָּה כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ עַל־ יַ֥ד אַשְׁדּ֖וֹד וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

47Ashdod, with its surrounding villages and settlements; Gaza, with its surrounding villages and settlements, to the Brook of Egypt and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.

47אַשְׁדּ֞וֹד בְּנוֹתֶ֣יהָ וַחֲצֵרֶ֗יהָ עַזָּ֥ה בְּנוֹתֶ֥יהָ וַחֲצֵרֶ֖יהָ עַד־ נַ֣חַל מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהַיָּ֥ם [הגבול] (הַגָּד֖וֹל) וּגְבֽוּל׃ ס

48In the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh,

48וּבָהָ֑ר שָׁמִ֥יר וְיַתִּ֖יר וְשׂוֹכֹֽה׃

49Dannah, Kiriath-sannah (that is, Debir),

49וְדַנָּ֥ה וְקִרְיַת־ סַנָּ֖ה הִ֥יא דְבִֽר׃

50Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim,

50וַעֲנָ֥ב וְאֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖ה וְעָנִֽים׃

51Goshen, Holon, and Giloh--eleven cities, with their settlements;

51וְגֹ֥שֶׁן וְחֹלֹ֖ן וְגִלֹ֑ה עָרִ֥ים אַֽחַת־ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

52Arab, Dumah, Eshan,

52אֲרַ֥ב וְרוּמָ֖ה וְאֶשְׁעָֽן׃

53Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

53[וינים] (וְיָנ֥וּם) וּבֵית־ תַּפּ֖וּחַ וַאֲפֵֽקָה׃

54Humtah, Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), and Zior--nine cities, with their settlements;

54וְחֻמְטָ֗ה וְקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥יא חֶבְר֖וֹן וְצִיעֹ֑ר עָרִ֥ים תֵּ֖שַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ ס

55Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah,

55מָע֥וֹן ׀ כַּרְמֶ֖ל וָזִ֥יף וְיוּטָּֽה׃

56Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah,

56וְיִזְרְעֶ֥אל וְיָקְדְעָ֖ם וְזָנֽוֹחַ׃

57Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah--ten cities, with their settlements;

57הַקַּ֖יִן גִּבְעָ֣ה וְתִמְנָ֑ה עָרִ֥ים עֶ֖שֶׂר וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

58Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor,

58חַלְח֥וּל בֵּֽית־ צ֖וּר וּגְדֽוֹר׃

59Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon--six cities, with their settlements;

59וּמַעֲרָ֥ת וּבֵית־ עֲנ֖וֹת וְאֶלְתְּקֹ֑ן עָרִ֥ים שֵׁ֖שׁ וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

60Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), and Rabbah--two cities, with their settlements.

60קִרְיַת־ בַּ֗עַל הִ֛יא קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִ֖ים וְהָֽרַבָּ֑ה עָרִ֥ים שְׁתַּ֖יִם וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ ס

61In the wilderness: Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah,

61בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר בֵּ֚ית הָעֲרָבָ֔ה מִדִּ֖ין וּסְכָכָֽה׃

62Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En-gedi--six cities, with their settlements.

62וְהַנִּבְשָׁ֥ן וְעִיר־ הַמֶּ֖לַח וְעֵ֣ין גֶּ֑דִי עָרִ֥ים שֵׁ֖שׁ וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

63But the descendants of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem. So the Jebusites still live in Jerusalem among the descendants of Judah today.

63וְאֶת־ הַיְבוּסִי֙ יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם לֹֽא־ [יוכלו] (יָכְל֥וּ) בְנֵֽי־ יְהוּדָ֖ה לְהֽוֹרִישָׁ֑ם וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב הַיְבוּסִ֜י אֶת־ בְּנֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ פ
