Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters are up to my neck. | 1Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck. |
I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing; I have drifted into deep waters, where the flood engulfs me. | 2Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can’t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me. |
I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. | 3I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me. |
Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me—my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay. | 4Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs on my head. Many enemies try to destroy me with lies, demanding that I give back what I didn’t steal. |
You know my folly, O God, and my guilt is not hidden from You. | 5O God, you know how foolish I am; my sins cannot be hidden from you. |
May those who hope in You not be ashamed through me, O Lord GOD of Hosts; may those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel. | 6Don’t let those who trust in you be ashamed because of me, O Sovereign LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Don’t let me cause them to be humiliated, O God of Israel. |
For I have endured scorn for Your sake, and shame has covered my face. | 7For I endure insults for your sake; humiliation is written all over my face. |
I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons, | 8Even my own brothers pretend they don’t know me; they treat me like a stranger. |
because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me. | 9Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. |
I wept and fasted, but it brought me reproach. | 10When I weep and fast, they scoff at me. |
I made sackcloth my clothing, and I was sport to them. | 11When I dress in burlap to show sorrow, they make fun of me. |
Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of drunkards. | 12I am the favorite topic of town gossip, and all the drunks sing about me. |
But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor. In Your abundant loving devotion, O God, answer me with Your sure salvation. | 13But I keep praying to you, LORD, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation. |
Rescue me from the mire and do not let me sink; deliver me from my foes and out of the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me from those who hate me, and pull me from these deep waters. |
Do not let the floods engulf me or the depths swallow me up; let not the Pit close its mouth over me. | 15Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for Your loving devotion is good; turn to me in keeping with Your great compassion. | 16Answer my prayers, O LORD, for your unfailing love is wonderful. Take care of me, for your mercy is so plentiful. |
Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! | 17Don’t hide from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble! |
Draw near to my soul and redeem me; ransom me because of my foes. | 18Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies. |
You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace. All my adversaries are before You. | 19You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace. You see all that my enemies are doing. |
Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one. | 20Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me. |
They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar to quench my thirst. | 21But instead, they give me poison for food; they offer me sour wine for my thirst. |
May their table become a snare; may it be a retribution and a trap. | 22Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare and their prosperity become a trap. |
May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. | 23Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually. |
Pour out Your wrath upon them, and let Your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out your fury on them; consume them with your burning anger. |
May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. | 25Let their homes become desolate and their tents be deserted. |
For they persecute the one You struck and recount the pain of those You wounded. | 26To the one you have punished, they add insult to injury; they add to the pain of those you have hurt. |
Add iniquity to their iniquity; let them not share in Your righteousness. | 27Pile their sins up high, and don’t let them go free. |
May they be blotted out of the Book of Life and not listed with the righteous. | 28Erase their names from the Book of Life; don’t let them be counted among the righteous. |
But I am in pain and distress; let Your salvation protect me, O God. | 29I am suffering and in pain. Rescue me, O God, by your saving power. |
I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him with thanksgiving. | 30Then I will praise God’s name with singing, and I will honor him with thanksgiving. |
And this will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. | 31For this will please the LORD more than sacrificing cattle, more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves. |
The humble will see and rejoice. You who seek God, let your hearts be revived! | 32The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged. |
For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His captive people. | 33For the LORD hears the cries of the needy; he does not despise his imprisoned people. |
Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them. | 34Praise him, O heaven and earth, the seas and all that move in them. |
For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. | 35For God will save Jerusalem and rebuild the towns of Judah. His people will live there and settle in their own land. |
The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will settle in it. | 36The descendants of those who obey him will inherit the land, and those who love him will live there in safety. |
