Berean Study Bible | New International Version |
And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said. | 1Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." |
Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. | 2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. |
So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, | 3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. |
while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, | 4And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, |
but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. | 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. |
“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? |
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” | 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." |
Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. |
And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” | 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" |
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. | 10The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. |
Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. | 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” | 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth." |
But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. | 13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear. |
Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” | 14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." |
“Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. | 15But the LORD said to him, "Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. |
So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |

Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me. |
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” | 24If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times." |
