And David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. | 1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. |
He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. | 2He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. |
My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence. | 3My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! |
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. | 4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me. | 5The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. | 6The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. |
In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears. | 7In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger. | 8The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth. | 9Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet. | 10He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. | 11He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
From the brightness of His presence coals of fire blazed forth. | 13From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. | 14The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. |
He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. |
The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils. | 16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. |
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. | 17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me. | 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support. | 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me. | 20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. | 21The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. | 22For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes. | 23For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity. | 24I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. |
So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. | 25The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless; | 26You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd. | 27You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. | 28You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. |
For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness. | 29Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. |
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall. | 30Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. | 31The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? | 32Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
God is my strong fortress and He makes my way clear. | 33The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights. | 34He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me. | 36You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way. | 37You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed. | 38I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet. | 39I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. |
You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me. | 40You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me. | 41You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They looked, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but He did not answer. | 42They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I ground them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets. | 43I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. |
You have delivered me from the strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me. | 44You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me. | 45Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. |
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds. | 46Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted— | 47The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me, | 48The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men. | 49He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name. | 50So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. |
Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.” | 51He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" |
