Israel's Penalty
34When the LORD heard your words, He grew angry and swore an oath, saying, 35“Not one of the men of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your fathers, 36except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land on which he has set foot, because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly.”…

So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say. / Your bodies will fall in this wilderness—all who were numbered in the census, everyone twenty years of age or older—because you have grumbled against Me. / Surely none of you will enter the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Numbers 32:11-12
‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob— / not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun—because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’

Hebrews 3:17-19
And with whom was God angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? / And to whom did He swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed? / So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter.

Joshua 5:6
For the Israelites had wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD vowed never to let them see the land He had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Hebrews 4:1-2
Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it. / For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.

Numbers 26:64-65
Among all these, however, there was not one who had been numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai. / For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one of the men of this evil generation
This phrase refers to the Israelites who were delivered from Egypt but failed to trust God at the edge of the Promised Land. Their lack of faith and rebellion, particularly at Kadesh Barnea (Numbers 13-14), led to God's judgment. The term "evil generation" highlights their disobedience and lack of faith, which is a recurring theme in the wilderness narratives. This serves as a warning against unbelief and disobedience, echoed in Hebrews 3:7-19, where the author warns believers not to harden their hearts as the Israelites did.

shall see the good land
The "good land" refers to Canaan, described as a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:8). It symbolizes God's promise and blessing, a place of rest and abundance. The denial of entry to this generation underscores the consequences of disobedience and unbelief. This also prefigures the ultimate rest and inheritance believers have in Christ, as discussed in Hebrews 4:1-11.

I swore to give your fathers
This promise was made to the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—as seen in Genesis 12:7, 26:3, and 28:13. It underscores God's faithfulness to His covenant, despite human unfaithfulness. The land promise is a central theme in the Pentateuch, representing God's commitment to His people and His plan of redemption. This also points to the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises in Jesus Christ, who secures a better covenant and eternal inheritance for believers (Hebrews 8:6).

Teaching Points
The Consequences of Disobedience
The Israelites' failure to trust and obey God resulted in severe consequences, including missing out on the blessings He had promised. This serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience in our own lives.

Faith and Trust in God's Promises
The promise of the land was sure, but the Israelites' lack of faith prevented them from receiving it. We are called to trust in God's promises, even when circumstances seem challenging.

Generational Impact of Sin
The disobedience of one generation can have lasting effects on future generations. It is crucial to live in a way that honors God and sets a positive example for those who come after us.

God's Faithfulness Despite Human Failure
Although the "evil generation" did not enter the Promised Land, God's promise was ultimately fulfilled through their descendants. God's faithfulness is unwavering, even when we fall short.(35) Surely . . . Comp. St. Luke 14:24, "None of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper."

Verses 35, 36. - They were all, the whole generation of them, evil, and therefore not a man of them should see the good land which God had promised to their fathers, with the exception of Caleb, who had wholly followed the Lord - had remained steadfast and faithful whilst the others fell away. Joshua also was exempted from this doom; but before mentioning him, Moses refers to himself as having also come under the Divine displeasure.
