Living for God's Glory
1Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered)a σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin),
2εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).
3ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries).
4Ἐν (With respect to) ᾧ (this) ξενίζονται (they think it strange), μὴ (not) συντρεχόντων (running with them) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) τῆς (-) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery) ἀνάχυσιν (overflow), βλασφημοῦντες (speaking evil of you),
5οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).
6εἰς (To) τοῦτο (this end) γὰρ (indeed), καὶ (even) νεκροῖς (to the dead) εὐηγγελίσθη (the gospel was proclaimed), ἵνα (so that) κριθῶσι (they might be judged) μὲν (indeed) κατὰ (according to) ἀνθρώπους (men) σαρκί (in the flesh); ζῶσι (they might live) δὲ (however) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) πνεύματι (in the spirit).
7Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) τέλος (end) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). σωφρονήσατε (Be clear minded) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) νήψατε (sober) εἰς (for the purpose of) προσευχάς (prayers),
8πρὸ (above) πάντων (all things), τὴν (-) εἰς (among) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἀγάπην (love) ἐκτενῆ (fervent) ἔχοντες (having), ὅτι (because) ἀγάπη (love) καλύπτει (covers over) πλῆθος (a multitude) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins),
9φιλόξενοι (hospitable) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἄνευ (without) γογγυσμοῦ (complaint),
10ἕκαστος (each) καθὼς (as) ἔλαβεν (has received) χάρισμα (a gift), εἰς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (each other) αὐτὸ (them) διακονοῦντες (serving), ὡς (as) καλοὶ (good) οἰκονόμοι (stewards) ποικίλης (of the manifold) χάριτος (grace) Θεοῦ (of God):
11εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).
Suffering as Christians
12Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), μὴ (not) ξενίζεσθε (be surprised at) τῇ (the) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) πυρώσει (fire) πρὸς (for) πειρασμὸν (a trial) ὑμῖν (to you) γινομένῃ (taking place), ὡς (as if) ξένου (a strange thing) ὑμῖν (to you) συμβαίνοντος (were happening).
13ἀλλὰ (But) καθὸ (as) κοινωνεῖτε (you have shared) τοῖς (in the) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) παθήμασιν (sufferings), χαίρετε (rejoice), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), χαρῆτε (you may rejoice) ἀγαλλιώμενοι (exulting).
14Εἰ (If) ὀνειδίζεσθε (you are insulted) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μακάριοι (you are blessed), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀναπαύεται (rests).b
15μὴ (Not) γάρ (for) τις (any) ὑμῶν (of you) πασχέτω (let suffer) ὡς (as) φονεὺς (a murderer), ἢ (or) κλέπτης (a thief), ἢ (or) κακοποιὸς (an evildoer), ἢ (or) ὡς (as) ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος (a troublesome meddler);
16εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) Χριστιανός (a Christian), μὴ (not) αἰσχυνέσθω (let him be ashamed); δοξαζέτω (let him glorify) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this).c
17ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time for) τοῦ (-) ἄρξασθαι (to have begun) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οἴκου (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) πρῶτον (first) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), τί (what will be) τὸ (the) τέλος (outcome) τῶν (of those) ἀπειθούντων (disobeying) τῷ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel)?
18καὶ (And),
“Εἰ (If) ὁ (the) δίκαιος (righteous one) μόλις (with difficulty) σώζεται (is saved),
ὁ (the) ἀσεβὴς (ungodly) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinner) ποῦ (where) φανεῖται (will appear)?”d
19Ὥστε (Therefore) καὶ (also), οἱ (those) πάσχοντες (suffering) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πιστῷ (to the faithful) Κτίστῃ (Creator) παρατιθέσθωσαν (let them commit) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) ἀγαθοποιΐᾳ (well doing).
