Nevertheless, the LORD said to Jehu
This phrase indicates a direct communication from God to Jehu, highlighting the importance of divine approval and guidance in the actions of Israel's leaders. Jehu was anointed by a prophet to become king (2 Kings 9:1-3), signifying God's direct involvement in his rise to power. This divine interaction underscores the biblical theme that God is sovereign over the affairs of nations and leaders.

Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight
Jehu's actions were seen as fulfilling God's judgment against the house of Ahab, which had led Israel into idolatry and sin. This phrase emphasizes the biblical principle that obedience to God's commands is paramount. Jehu's zeal in eradicating Baal worship and executing Ahab's descendants (2 Kings 10:18-28) was considered righteous in the context of purging Israel of idolatry.

and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart
This reflects God's judgment against Ahab's dynasty due to their idolatry and wickedness, as prophesied by Elijah (1 Kings 21:21-24). Jehu's actions were a fulfillment of divine prophecy, demonstrating the biblical theme of God's justice and the certainty of His prophetic word. The destruction of Ahab's house was a necessary step in restoring Israel's covenant relationship with God.

four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel
This promise to Jehu is a reward for his obedience, ensuring a dynastic succession for his descendants. Historically, this was fulfilled as Jehu's lineage continued through Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, and Zechariah (2 Kings 13-15). This promise also highlights the biblical theme of God's faithfulness to His word, as well as the conditional nature of blessings based on obedience. The continuation of Jehu's line contrasts with the abrupt end of Ahab's dynasty, illustrating the consequences of faithfulness versus disobedience.

Obedience to God's Commands
Jehu's actions demonstrate the importance of following God's instructions, even when they involve difficult tasks.

Divine Reward and Consequences
God rewards Jehu with a promise for his descendants, illustrating that obedience can lead to blessings, but also warns of the need for continued faithfulness.

The Complexity of Human Actions
Jehu's account shows that while one can be used by God for His purposes, the heart and methods matter, as seen in later judgments on Jehu's house.

God's Sovereignty in Leadership
The rise and fall of leaders are under God's control, and He uses them to accomplish His purposes, as seen in Jehu's anointing and actions.

Legacy and Generational Impact
Jehu's obedience affected his descendants, reminding us that our actions can have long-lasting effects on future generations.(30) And the Lord said.--Perhaps through Elisha.

And hast done.--So the Syriac and Arabic versions. The Hebrew wants the and.

Thy children of the fourth generation.--The fulfilment of this oracle is noticed in 2Kings 15:12. (Comp. the words of the commandment, "visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation;" Exodus 20:5.)

Verse 30. - And the Lord said unto John - scarcely by direct revelation, rather by the mouth of a prophet, most probably of Elisha, as Thenius supposes - Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes. In making himself the executor of God's will with respect to the house of Ahab, and utterly destroying it, as he had been commanded (2 Kings 9:7), Jehu had "done well;" he had also done well in putting down the worship of Baal, and slaying the idolaters, for the destruction of idolaters was distinctly commanded in the Law (Exodus 22:20; Exodus 32:27; Numbers 25:5). These acts of his are praised; but nothing is said of his motives in doing them. They were probably to a great extent selfish. And hath done unto the house of Ahab all that was in mine heart (see 2 Kings 9:26-37; 2 Kings 10:1-7, 11, 14), thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. External obedience was suitably rewarded by an external, earthly honor - the honor of having his dynasty settled upon the throne during five generations, and for a period of above a hundred years. No other Israelite dynasty held the throne longer than three generations, or for so much as fifty years. The "children" or descendants of Jehu who sat upon the throne after him were Jehoahaz, his son, Jehoash or Joash, his grandson, Jeroboam II., his great-grandson, and Zachariah, son of Jeroboam II., his great-great-grandson
