Liberality: Labour to be Enabled to Exercise

Liberality, in the context of Christian doctrine, refers to the generous and willing sharing of one's resources, time, and talents for the benefit of others and the glory of God. It is a virtue that is highly esteemed in Scripture, reflecting the character of God Himself, who is the ultimate giver. The exercise of liberality is not merely an act of charity but a demonstration of the love and grace that believers have received through Christ. To effectively practice liberality, believers are encouraged to labor diligently, thereby enabling themselves to give generously.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible provides numerous exhortations and examples of liberality. In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 , the Apostle Paul writes, "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." This passage underscores the principle that liberality is a matter of the heart, motivated by love and joy rather than obligation.

Work as a Means to Liberality

The Scriptures affirm that labor is a means by which believers can exercise liberality. In Ephesians 4:28 , Paul instructs, "He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need." Here, work is not only a means of personal provision but also a way to generate resources for the purpose of giving to others. This perspective elevates the value of work beyond mere self-sustenance to a divine calling to support and bless others.

Examples of Liberality in Scripture

The early church provides a compelling example of liberality in action. Acts 2:44-45 describes the believers in Jerusalem: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need." This communal sharing was a voluntary act of love and unity, demonstrating the transformative power of the Gospel in their lives.

Another notable example is the Macedonian churches, who, despite their own poverty, exhibited extraordinary generosity. Paul commends them in 2 Corinthians 8:2-3 , saying, "In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability." Their liberality was a testament to their faith and commitment to the work of the Gospel.

The Heart of Liberality

True liberality is rooted in the recognition of God's abundant grace. As believers labor to provide for themselves and others, they are reminded of the ultimate gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. In 1 Timothy 6:17-19 , Paul advises the wealthy, "Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share, treasuring up for themselves a firm foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life."

Conclusion

While the Bible does not explicitly conclude on the topic of liberality, it is clear that the practice of generous giving is a vital aspect of Christian living. Through diligent labor and a heart aligned with God's purposes, believers are empowered to exercise liberality, reflecting the love and generosity of their Creator.
