The Words of Agur
17As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother, may the ravens of the valley pluck it out and young vultures devour it. 18There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand: 19the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.…

There are three things too wonderful for me,
This phrase introduces a literary device common in Hebrew poetry, where a numerical progression is used to emphasize the completeness or significance of the list. The use of "three" and "four" is a poetic way to draw attention to the marvels of God's creation and the mysteries of life that are beyond human comprehension. The term "wonderful" suggests something extraordinary or miraculous, indicating that these are aspects of creation that inspire awe and reverence. This reflects the biblical theme of God's wisdom and the limitations of human understanding, as seen in Job 42:3, where Job acknowledges things "too wonderful" for him to know.

four that I cannot understand:
The progression from three to four signifies an intensification, suggesting that the fourth item is particularly significant or mysterious. This structure is also found in other parts of Proverbs and the book of Amos, where it serves to highlight the depth and complexity of the subject matter. The phrase "cannot understand" underscores human limitations in grasping the full scope of God's creation and providence. This aligns with the biblical theme of divine mystery, as seen in Isaiah 55:8-9, where God's thoughts and ways are higher than human thoughts and ways. The use of this phrase invites readers to humility and wonder, recognizing that some aspects of life and creation are beyond human logic and reason, pointing to the infinite wisdom of God.

Teaching Points
The Humility of Wisdom
True wisdom begins with the recognition of our limitations. Agur's admission of not understanding certain things is a model of humility for us.

The Wonder of Creation
Observing the natural world should lead us to worship and awe. God's creation is filled with mysteries that point to His greatness.

The Pursuit of Understanding
While some things are beyond our understanding, we are called to seek wisdom and knowledge, trusting that God reveals what we need to know.

Trust in God's Sovereignty
Even when we do not understand, we can trust in God's sovereign plan and His perfect wisdom.

Embrace Mystery with Faith
Embrace the mysteries of life with faith, knowing that God's ways are higher than our ways.(18) Too wonderful for me.--The wonder in Agur's eyes seems to be that none of the four leave any trace behind them. (Comp. Wisdom Of Solomon 5:10 sqq.) For a spiritual interpretation of these and other passages in this chapter, comp. Bishop Wordsworth's Commentary.

Verses 18-20. - A proverb concerning four inscrutable things, connected with the last by mention of the eagle. Verse 18. - There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not. The great point is the fourth, to which the three previous things lead up, all of them being alike in this, that they leave no trace. The facts are marvellous; Agur feels like Job, "I have uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not" (Job 42:3).
