New Living Translation | New International Version |
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. |
Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, |
For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. |
Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. | 4Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. |
Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died. | 5They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live. | 7He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, |
For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. |
Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. | 10Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, |
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the plans of the Most High. |
That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. | 12So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. |
He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, |
For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron. | 16for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. |
Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. | 17Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. |
They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. | 18They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. |
He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. | 20He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts. | 22Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy. |
Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. | 23Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. |
They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. | 24They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. |
He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. | 25For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. |
Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. | 26They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. |
They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. | 27They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits' end. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. |
He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. | 29He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. |
What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! | 30They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. |
Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. |
He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. | 33He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, |
He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there. | 34and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. |
But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water. | 35He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; |
He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities. | 36there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. |
They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops. | 37They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; |
How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase. | 38he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. |
When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, | 39Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; |
the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands. | 40he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. |
But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep. | 41But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. |
The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent. | 42The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. |
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD. | 43Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD. |
