New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His gracious love exists forever. |
Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. | 2Let those who have been redeemed by the LORD declare it— those whom he redeemed from the power of the enemy, |
For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3those whom he gathered from other lands— from the east, west, north, and south. |
Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. | 4They wandered in desolate wilderness; they found no road to a city where they could live. |
Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died. | 5Hungry and thirsty, their spirits failed. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live. | 7He led them in a straight way to find a city where they could live. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and his awesome deeds for mankind. |
For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9He has satisfied the one who thirsts, filling the hungry with what is good. |
Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. | 10Some sat in deepest darkness, shackled with cruel iron, |
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they had rebelled against the command of God, despising the advice of the Most High. |
That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. | 12He humbled them through suffering, as they stumbled without a helper. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. | 14And he brought them out from darkness and the shadow of death, shattering their chains. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds to mankind. |
For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron. | 16For he shattered bronze gates and cut through iron bars. |
Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. | 17Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities. |
They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. | 18They loathed all food, and even reached the gates of death. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, he delivered them from certain destruction. |
He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. | 20He issued his command and healed them; he delivered them from their destruction. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds for mankind. |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts. | 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and talk about his works with shouts of joy. |
Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who work in the great waters, |
They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. | 24witnessed the works of the LORD— his awesome deeds in the ocean's depth. |
He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. | 25He spoke and stirred up a windstorm that made its waves surge. |
Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. | 26The people ascended skyward and descended to the depths, their courage melting away in their peril. |
They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, as all their wisdom became useless. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 28Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, the LORD brought them out of their distress. |
He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. | 29He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down. |
What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! | 30So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind. |
Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation. | 32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders. |
He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. | 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into dry ground, |
He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there. | 34and a fruitful land into a salty waste, due to the wickedness of its inhabitants. |
But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water. | 35He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. |
He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities. | 36There he settled the hungry, where they built a city to live in. |
They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops. | 37They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a productive harvest. |
How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase. | 38Then he blessed them, and they became numerous; he multiplied their cattle. |
When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, | 39But they became few in number, and humiliated by continued oppression, agony, and sorrow. |
the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands. | 40Having poured contempt on their nobles, causing them to err aimlessly in the way. |
But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep. | 41Yet he lifted the needy from affliction and made them families like a flock. |
The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent. | 42The upright see it and rejoice, but the mouth of an evil person is shut. |
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD. | 43Let whoever is wise observe these things, that they may comprehend the gracious love of the LORD. |
