| 1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. | 1For the choir director. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. |
| 2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. | 2He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. |
| 3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. | 3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD. |
| 4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. | 4How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. |
| 5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. | 5Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They would be too numerous to count. |
| 6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings. | 6Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. |
| 7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: | 7Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. |
| 8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” | 8I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart." |
| 9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know. | 9I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know. |
| 10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. | 10I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation. |
| 11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. | 11You, O LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me. |
| 12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. | 12For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me. |
| 13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. | 13Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; Make haste, O LORD, to help me. |
| 14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. | 14Let those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt. |
| 15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!” | 15Let those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, "Aha, aha!" |
| 16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!” | 16Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, "The LORD be magnified!" |
| 17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay. | 17Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God. |
