New Living Translation | King James Bible |
I come to you for protection, O LORD my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me! | 1Shiggaion of David, which he sang unto the LORD, concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite. O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: |
If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion, tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me. | 2Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. |
O LORD my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice, | 3O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; |
if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause, | 4If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:) |
then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust. Interlude | 5Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah. |
Arise, O LORD, in anger! Stand up against the fury of my enemies! Wake up, my God, and bring justice! | 6Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded. |
Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high. | 7So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high. |
The LORD judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O LORD, for I am innocent, O Most High! | 8The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. |
End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God. | 9Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. |
God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. | 10My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. |
God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day. | 11God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. |
If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. | 12If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. |
He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows. | 13He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors. |
The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. | 14Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. |
They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. | 15He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. |
The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads. | 16His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate. |
I will thank the LORD because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. | 17I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high. |
