The proverbs of Solomon: A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother.1The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
Tainted wealth has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.2Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
The LORD will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.3The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.4He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
A wise youth harvests in the summer, but one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace.5He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
The godly are showered with blessings; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.6Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away.7The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
The wise are glad to be instructed, but babbling fools fall flat on their faces.8The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.9He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace.10He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.
The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.11The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.12Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod.13In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites disaster.14Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.15The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.16The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.
People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray.17He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.18He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.
Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.19In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless.20The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.21The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.22The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible.23It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
The fears of the wicked will be fulfilled; the hopes of the godly will be granted.24The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.25As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
Lazy people irritate their employers, like vinegar to the teeth or smoke in the eyes.26As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
Fear of the LORD lengthens one’s life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.27The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked come to nothing.28The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
The way of the LORD is a stronghold to those with integrity, but it destroys the wicked.29The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
The godly will never be disturbed, but the wicked will be removed from the land.30The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.31The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.32The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
