New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. | 1When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. |
Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” | 2And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. |
Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared. | 3And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. |
Then Jesus said to him, “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy. This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.” The Faith of a Roman Officer | 4And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. |
When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him, | 5And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, |
“Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.” | 6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. |
Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.” | 7And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. |
But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. | 8The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. |
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.” | 9For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. |
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! | 10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. |
And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. | 11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. |
But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” | 12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. |
Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour. Jesus Heals Many People | 13And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. |
When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. | 14And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. |
But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. | 15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. |
That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. | 16When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: |
This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said, “He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.” The Cost of Following Jesus | 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. |
When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. | 18Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. |
Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” | 19And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. |
But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.” | 20And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. |
Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” | 21And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. |
But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead. ” Jesus Calms the Storm | 22But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. |
Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. | 23And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. |
Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. | 24And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. |
The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” | 25And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. |
Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. | 26And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. |
The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” Jesus Heals Two Demon-Possessed Men | 27But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! |
When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him. They came out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could go through that area. | 28And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. |
They began screaming at him, “Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?” | 29And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? |
There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding in the distance. | 30And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. |
So the demons begged, “If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.” | 31So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. |
“All right, go!” Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. | 32And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. |
The herdsmen fled to the nearby town, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men. | 33And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. |
Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone. | 34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts. |
