New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? | 1What should we say, then? Should we go on sinning so that grace may increase? |
Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? | 2Of course not! How can we who died as far as sin is concerned go on living in it? |
Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? | 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into union with the Messiah Jesus were baptized into his death? |
For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. | 4Therefore, through baptism we were buried with him into his death so that, just as the Messiah was raised from the dead by the Father's glory, we too may live an entirely new life. |
Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. | 5For if we have become united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. |
We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. | 6We know that our old natures were crucified with him so that our sin-laden bodies might be rendered powerless and we might no longer be slaves to sin. |
For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. | 7For the person who has died has been freed from sin. |
And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. | 8Now if we have died with the Messiah, we believe that we will also live with him, |
We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. | 9for we know that the Messiah, who was raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has mastery over him. |
When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. | 10For when he died, he died once and for all as far as sin is concerned. But now that he is alive, he lives for God. |
So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. | 11In the same way, you too must continuously consider yourselves dead as far as sin is concerned, but living for God through the Messiah Jesus. |
Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. | 12Therefore, do not let sin rule your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires. |
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. | 13Stop offering the parts of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness. Instead, offer yourselves to God as people who have been brought from death to life and the parts of your body as instruments of righteousness to God. |
Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace. | 14For sin will not have mastery over you, because you are not under Law but under grace. |
Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! | 15What, then, does this mean? Should we go on sinning because we are not under Law but under grace? Of course not! |
Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. | 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? |
Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. | 17But thank God that, though you were once slaves of sin, you became obedient from your hearts to that form of teaching with which you were entrusted! |
Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. | 18And since you have been freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. |
Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy. | 19I am speaking in simple terms because of the frailty of your human nature. Just as you once offered the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater disobedience, so now, in the same way, you must offer the parts of your body as slaves to righteousness that leads to sanctification. |
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were "free" as far as righteousness was concerned. |
And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. | 21What benefit did you get from doing those things you are now ashamed of? For those things resulted in death. |
But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. | 22But now that you have been freed from sin and have become God's slaves, the benefit you reap is sanctification, and the result is eternal life. |
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. | 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in union with the Messiah Jesus our Lord. |
