1The LORD said to Moses,

1Later on, the LORD told Moses,

2“Tell Aaron and his sons to be very careful with the sacred gifts that the Israelites set apart for me, so they do not bring shame on my holy name. I am the LORD.

2"Tell Aaron and his sons that they are to separate themselves for the sacred things of the Israelis and that they are not to defile my holy name. I am the LORD.

3Give them the following instructions. “In all future generations, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean when he approaches the sacred offerings that the people of Israel consecrate to the LORD, he must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.

3Tell them that whoever among your descendants throughout your generations approaches the sacred things that the Israelis had consecrated to the LORD while still remaining unclean is to be eliminated from my presence. I am the LORD.

4“If any of Aaron’s descendants has a skin disease or any kind of discharge that makes him ceremonially unclean, he may not eat from the sacred offerings until he has been pronounced clean. He also becomes unclean by touching a corpse, or by having an emission of semen,

4If one of Aaron's descendants has an infectious skin disease or a discharge, he is not to eat anything sacred until he has been cleansed. Anyone who touches an unclean thing on account of the dead, or who has a seminal discharge,

5or by touching a small animal that is unclean, or by touching someone who is ceremonially unclean for any reason.

5or who becomes unclean by touching a creeping creature or another human being, whatever the uncleanness may be—

6The man who is defiled in any of these ways will remain unclean until evening. He may not eat from the sacred offerings until he has bathed himself in water.

6such a person who comes in contact with anything like this will become unclean until evening. As a result, he is not to eat the sacred things unless he has bathed himself with water.

7When the sun goes down, he will be ceremonially clean again and may eat from the sacred offerings, for this is his food.

7When the sun has gone down and he has been cleansed, he may eat of the sacred things, since that's his food.

8He may not eat an animal that has died a natural death or has been torn apart by wild animals, for this would defile him. I am the LORD.

8He is not to eat the carcass of an animal that was torn by animals, thereby defiling himself with it. I am the LORD.

9“The priests must follow my instructions carefully. Otherwise they will be punished for their sin and will die for violating my instructions. I am the LORD who makes them holy.

9They are to keep my charge. By doing so, they won't bear the punishment of sin because of it and therefore die if they've been defiled by it. I am the LORD, who sets them apart."

10“No one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offerings. Even guests and hired workers in a priest’s home are not allowed to eat them.

10"No resident alien is to eat anything sacred. Neither the visitor of the priest nor a hired laborer is to eat anything sacred.

11However, if the priest buys a slave for himself, the slave may eat from the sacred offerings. And if his slaves have children, they also may share his food.

11If a priest acquires a slave as property with his own money, he may eat with him. Those who were born in his house may eat his food.

12If a priest’s daughter marries someone outside the priestly family, she may no longer eat the sacred offerings.

12If a priest's daughter marries a resident alien, she is not to eat the sacred raised offerings.

13But if she becomes a widow or is divorced and has no children to support her, and she returns to live in her father’s home as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food again. Otherwise, no one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offerings.

13If the priest's daughter is a widow, or is divorced and childless, so that she has to return to her father's house as in her younger days, she may eat her father's food, but no resident alien may eat it.

14“Any such person who eats the sacred offerings without realizing it must pay the priest for the amount eaten, plus an additional 20 percent.

14If a person eats anything sacred inadvertently, he is to add a fifth part to it and then give the sacred thing to the priest.

15The priests must not let the Israelites defile the sacred offerings brought to the LORD

15They are not to defile the sacred things of the Israelis that they have offered to the LORD,

16by allowing unauthorized people to eat them. This would bring guilt upon them and require them to pay compensation. I am the LORD who makes them holy.” Worthy and Unworthy Offerings

16thereby causing them to bear the punishment of their iniquity for wrongdoing when they eat their sacred things, because I am the LORD, who sets them apart."

17And the LORD said to Moses,

17The LORD told Moses,

18“Give Aaron and his sons and all the Israelites these instructions, which apply both to native Israelites and to the foreigners living among you. “If you present a gift as a burnt offering to the LORD, whether it is to fulfill a vow or is a voluntary offering,

18"Tell Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelis that when a person from the house of Israel or from the resident aliens living in Israel brings his offering to the LORD as a whole burnt offering (whether in fulfillment of a promise or a free will offerings),

19you will be accepted only if your offering is a male animal with no defects. It may be a bull, a ram, or a male goat.

19so that he'll be sure to be accepted, he is to offer a male without defect from the bulls, the lambs, and the goats.

20Do not present an animal with defects, because the LORD will not accept it on your behalf.

20However, whatever has a defect is not to be offered, because it won't be acceptable for you.

21“If you present a peace offering to the LORD from the herd or the flock, whether it is to fulfill a vow or is a voluntary offering, you must offer a perfect animal. It may have no defect of any kind.

21"If a person brings a peace offering sacrifice to the LORD to fulfill a vow or a free will offering from the herd or the flock, it is to be sound in order to be accepted, without any defect in it.

22You must not offer an animal that is blind, crippled, or injured, or that has a wart, a skin sore, or scabs. Such animals must never be offered on the altar as special gifts to the LORD.

22You are not to bring to the LORD an offering that is blind, fractured, mutilated, or infected with ulcers, scurvy, or scales. You are not to present any of them as an offering made by fire on the altar for the LORD.

23If a bull or lamb has a leg that is too long or too short, it may be offered as a voluntary offering, but it may not be offered to fulfill a vow.

23"You may offer a bull or lamb that has one limb longer than the other or that is stunted as a free will offering, but it's not acceptable in fulfillment of a promise.

24If an animal has damaged testicles or is castrated, you may not offer it to the LORD. You must never do this in your own land,

24You are not to bring to the LORD an animal that has been emasculated, crushed, torn, or cut apart. You are not to practice this in your land.

25and you must not accept such an animal from foreigners and then offer it as a sacrifice to your God. Such animals will not be accepted on your behalf, for they are mutilated or defective.”

25A resident alien is not to offer as food to your God any of these items, because they are afflicted with ritual corruption due to their defects. They're not acceptable for you."

26And the LORD said to Moses,

26The LORD told Moses,

27“When a calf or lamb or goat is born, it must be left with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a special gift to the LORD.

27"Whenever a bull, a sheep, or a goat is born, it is to remain for seven days under the care of its mother. But on the eighth day onwards, it may be accepted as an offering made by fire to the LORD.

28But you must not slaughter a mother animal and her offspring on the same day, whether from the herd or the flock.

28However, you are not to slaughter a bull or a ewe along with its offspring on the same day.

29When you bring a thanksgiving offering to the LORD, sacrifice it properly so you will be accepted.

29When you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, bring it so that it's acceptable for you.

30Eat the entire sacrificial animal on the day it is presented. Do not leave any of it until the next morning. I am the LORD.

30It is to be eaten that same day. You are not to leave any of it until morning. I am the LORD.

31“You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD.

31"Keep my commands and observe them. I am the LORD.

32Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the LORD who makes you holy.

32"You are not to defile my sacred name, because I've been set apart in the midst of the Israelis. Furthermore, I am the LORD, who sets you apart—

33It was I who rescued you from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. I am the LORD.”

33who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD."
