New Living TranslationHolman Christian Standard Bible
O God, why have you rejected us so long? Why is your anger so intense against the sheep of your own pasture?1A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, God? Why does Your anger burn against the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember that we are the people you chose long ago, the tribe you redeemed as your own special possession! And remember Jerusalem, your home here on earth.2Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe for Your own possession. Remember Mount Zion where You dwell.
Walk through the awful ruins of the city; see how the enemy has destroyed your sanctuary.3Make Your way to the everlasting ruins, to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary.
There your enemies shouted their victorious battle cries; there they set up their battle standards.4Your adversaries roared in the meeting place where You met with us. They set up their emblems as signs.
They swung their axes like woodcutters in a forest.5It was like men in a thicket of trees, wielding axes,
With axes and picks, they smashed the carved paneling.6then smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground. They defiled the place that bears your name.7They set Your sanctuary on fire; they utterly desecrated the dwelling place of Your name.
Then they thought, “Let’s destroy everything!” So they burned down all the places where God was worshiped.8They said in their hearts," Let us oppress them relentlessly." They burned down every place throughout the land where God met with us.
We no longer see your miraculous signs. All the prophets are gone, and no one can tell us when it will end.9There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer a prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last.
How long, O God, will you allow our enemies to insult you? Will you let them dishonor your name forever?10God, how long will the enemy mock? Will the foe insult Your name forever?
Why do you hold back your strong right hand? Unleash your powerful fist and destroy them.11Why do You hold back Your hand? Stretch out Your right hand and destroy them!
You, O God, are my king from ages past, bringing salvation to the earth.12God my King is from ancient times, performing saving acts on the earth.
You split the sea by your strength and smashed the heads of the sea monsters.13You divided the sea with Your strength; You smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the waters;
You crushed the heads of Leviathan and let the desert animals eat him.14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him to the creatures of the desert.
You caused the springs and streams to gush forth, and you dried up rivers that never run dry.15You opened up springs and streams; You dried up ever-flowing rivers.
Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight and the sun.16The day is Yours, also the night; You established the moon and the sun.
You set the boundaries of the earth, and you made both summer and winter.17You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made summer and winter.
See how these enemies insult you, LORD. A foolish nation has dishonored your name.18Remember this: the enemy has mocked Yahweh, and a foolish people has insulted Your name.
Don’t let these wild beasts destroy your turtledoves. Don’t forget your suffering people forever.19Do not give the life of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your poor people forever.
Remember your covenant promises, for the land is full of darkness and violence!20Consider the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of violence.
Don’t let the downtrodden be humiliated again. Instead, let the poor and needy praise your name.21Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame; let the poor and needy praise Your name.
Arise, O God, and defend your cause. Remember how these fools insult you all day long.22Rise up, God, defend Your cause! Remember the insults that fools bring against You all day long.
Don’t overlook what your enemies have said or their growing uproar.23Do not forget the clamor of Your adversaries, the tumult of Your opponents that goes up constantly.
