New Living Translation | English Standard Version |
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. | 1As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. |
I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? | 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? |
Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” | 3My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” |
My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! | 4These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. |
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and | 5Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation |
my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar. | 6and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. |
I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. | 7Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. |
But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. | 8By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. |
“O God my rock,” I cry, “why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” | 9I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” |
Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?” | 10As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” |
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! | 11Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. |
