At that time Jeroboam’s son Abijah became very sick. | 1At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became sick. |
So Jeroboam told his wife, “Disguise yourself so that no one will recognize you as my wife. Then go to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh—the man who told me I would become king. | 2Jeroboam said to his wife, "Go disguise yourself, so they won't know that you're Jeroboam's wife, and go to Shiloh. The prophet Ahijah is there; it was he who told about me becoming king over this people. |
Take him a gift of ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and ask him what will happen to the boy.” | 3Take with you ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy." |
So Jeroboam’s wife went to Ahijah’s home at Shiloh. He was an old man now and could no longer see. | 4Jeroboam's wife did that: she went to Shiloh and arrived at Ahijah's house. Ahijah could not see; he was blind due to his age. |
But the LORD had told Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife will come here, pretending to be someone else. She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick. Give her the answer I give you.” | 5But the LORD had said to Ahijah, "Jeroboam's wife is coming soon to ask you about her son, for he is sick. You are to say such and such to her. When she arrives, she will be disguised." |
So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he called out, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else?” Then he told her, “I have bad news for you. | 6When Ahijah heard the sound of her feet entering the door, he said, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you disguised? I have bad news for you. |
Give your husband, Jeroboam, this message from the LORD, the God of Israel: ‘I promoted you from the ranks of the common people and made you ruler over my people Israel. | 7Go tell Jeroboam, 'This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I raised you up from among the people, appointed you ruler over my people Israel, |
I ripped the kingdom away from the family of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart and always did whatever I wanted. | 8tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to you. But you were not like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what is right in my sight. |
You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made other gods for yourself and have made me furious with your gold calves. And since you have turned your back on me, | 9You behaved more wickedly than all who were before you. In order to anger me, you have proceeded to make for yourself other gods and cast images, but you have flung me behind your back. |
I will bring disaster on your dynasty and will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel. I will burn up your royal dynasty as one burns up trash until it is all gone. | 10Because of all this, I am about to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam: I will wipe out all of Jeroboam's males, both slave and free, in Israel; I will sweep away the house of Jeroboam as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone! |
The members of Jeroboam’s family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures. I, the LORD, have spoken.’” | 11Anyone who belongs to Jeroboam and dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and anyone who dies in the field, the birds will eat, for the LORD has spoken!' |
Then Ahijah said to Jeroboam’s wife, “Go on home, and when you enter the city, the child will die. | 12"As for you, get up and go to your house. When your feet enter the city, the boy will die. |
All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only member of your family who will have a proper burial, for this child is the only good thing that the LORD, the God of Israel, sees in the entire family of Jeroboam. | 13All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He alone out of Jeroboam's house will be given a proper burial because out of the house of Jeroboam something favorable to the LORD God of Israel was found in him. |
“In addition, the LORD will raise up a king over Israel who will destroy the family of Jeroboam. This will happen today, even now! | 14The LORD will raise up for himself a king over Israel, who will wipe out the house of Jeroboam. This is the day, yes, even today! |
Then the LORD will shake Israel like a reed whipped about in a stream. He will uproot the people of Israel from this good land that he gave their ancestors and will scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, for they have angered the LORD with the Asherah poles they have set up for worship. | 15For the LORD will strike Israel so that they will shake as a reed shakes in water. He will uproot Israel from this good soil that he gave to their ancestors. He will scatter them beyond the Euphrates because they made their Asherah poles, angering the LORD. |
He will abandon Israel because Jeroboam sinned and made Israel sin along with him.” | 16He will give up Israel because of Jeroboam's sins that he committed and caused Israel to commit." |
So Jeroboam’s wife returned to Tirzah, and the child died just as she walked through the door of her home. | 17Then Jeroboam's wife got up and left and went to Tirzah. As she was crossing the threshold of the house, the boy died. |
And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, as the LORD had promised through the prophet Ahijah. | 18He was buried, and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the LORD he had spoken through his servant the prophet Ahijah. |
The rest of the events in Jeroboam’s reign, including all his wars and how he ruled, are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel. | 19As for the rest of the events of Jeroboam's reign, how he waged war and how he reigned, note that they are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings. |
Jeroboam reigned in Israel twenty-two years. When Jeroboam died, his son Nadab became the next king. Rehoboam Rules in Judah | 20The length of Jeroboam's reign was twenty-two years. He rested with his fathers, and his son Nadab became king in his place. |
Meanwhile, Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel as the place to honor his name. Rehoboam’s mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. | 21Now Rehoboam, Solomon's son, reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king; he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city where the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put his name. Rehoboam's mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. |
During Rehoboam’s reign, the people of Judah did what was evil in the LORD’s sight, provoking his anger with their sin, for it was even worse than that of their ancestors. | 22Judah did what was evil in the LORD's sight. They provoked him to jealous anger more than all that their ancestors had done with the sins they committed. |
For they also built for themselves pagan shrines and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree. | 23They also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree; |
There were even male and female shrine prostitutes throughout the land. The people imitated the detestable practices of the pagan nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites. | 24there were even male cult prostitutes in the land. They imitated all the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites. |
In the fifth year of King Rehoboam’s reign, King Shishak of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem. | 25In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, King Shishak of Egypt went to war against Jerusalem. |
He ransacked the treasuries of the LORD’s Temple and the royal palace; he stole everything, including all the gold shields Solomon had made. | 26He seized the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the treasuries of the royal palace. He took everything. He took all the gold shields that Solomon had made. |
King Rehoboam later replaced them with bronze shields as substitutes, and he entrusted them to the care of the commanders of the guard who protected the entrance to the royal palace. | 27King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and committed them into the care of the captains of the guards who protected the entrance to the king's palace. |
Whenever the king went to the Temple of the LORD, the guards would also take the shields and then return them to the guardroom. | 28Whenever the king entered the LORD's temple, the guards would carry the shields, then they would take them back to the armory. |
The rest of the events in Rehoboam’s reign and everything he did are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Judah. | 29The rest of the events of Rehoboam's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written about in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings. |
There was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. | 30There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout their reigns. |
When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in the City of David. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. Then his son Abijam became the next king. | 31Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite. His son Abijam became king in his place. |
