New King James Version | New Living Translation |
Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. | 1Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. |
Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth. | 2She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth. |
And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. | 3Then I witnessed in heaven another significant event. I saw a large red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven crowns on his heads. |
His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. | 4His tail swept away one-third of the stars in the sky, and he threw them to the earth. He stood in front of the woman as she was about to give birth, ready to devour her baby as soon as it was born. |
She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. | 5She gave birth to a son who was to rule all nations with an iron rod. And her child was snatched away from the dragon and was caught up to God and to his throne. |
Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. | 6And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place to care for her for 1,260 days. |
And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, | 7Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. |
but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. | 8And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. |
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. | 9This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. |
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. | 10Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night. |
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. | 11And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die. |
Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.” | 12Therefore, rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great anger, knowing that he has little time.” |
Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child. | 13When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. |
But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. | 14But she was given two wings like those of a great eagle so she could fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness. There she would be cared for and protected from the dragon for a time, times, and half a time. |
So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. | 15Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth. |
But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. | 16But the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out from the mouth of the dragon. |
And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. | 17And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus. [18] Then the dragon took his stand on the shore beside the sea. |
