And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples1And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples.
he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”2And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”3And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”4And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.6And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
Now the men were about twelve in all.7There were about twelve men in all.
And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God.8And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.9But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.
And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.10This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,11And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.”13Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”
Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.14Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.
And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”15But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”
Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.16And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.17And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.
And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.18Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.
Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.19And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.
So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.20So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.
When these things were accomplished, Paul purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”21Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.22And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
And about that time there arose a great commotion about the Way.23About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way.
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no small profit to the craftsmen.24For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.
He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: “Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade.25These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.
Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.26And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.
So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”27And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”
Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”28When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theater with one accord, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions.29So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel.
And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him.30But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.
Then some of the officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater.31And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.
Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together.32Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.
And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, and wanted to make his defense to the people.33Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.
But when they found out that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours, “Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”34But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple guardian of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?35And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?
Therefore, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rashly.36Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.
For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.37For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.
Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a case against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.38If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.
But if you have any other inquiry to make, it shall be determined in the lawful assembly.39But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.
For we are in danger of being called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering.”40For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”
And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.41And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
