Since times are not hidden from the Almighty, Why do those who know Him see not His days?1“Why does the Almighty not reserve times for judgment? Why may those who know Him never see His days?
Some remove landmarks; They seize flocks violently and feed on them;2Men move boundary stones; they pasture stolen flocks.
They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; They take the widow’s ox as a pledge.3They drive away the donkey of the fatherless and take the widow’s ox in pledge.
They push the needy off the road; All the poor of the land are forced to hide.4They push the needy off the road and force all the poor of the land into hiding.
Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, They go out to their work, searching for food. The wilderness yields food for them and for their children.5Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children.
They gather their fodder in the field And glean in the vineyard of the wicked.6They gather fodder in the fields and glean the vineyards of the wicked.
They spend the night naked, without clothing, And have no covering in the cold.7Without clothing, they spend the night naked; they have no covering against the cold.
They are wet with the showers of the mountains, And huddle around the rock for want of shelter.8Drenched by mountain rains, they huddle against the rocks for want of shelter.
Some snatch the fatherless from the breast, And take a pledge from the poor.9The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast; the nursing child of the poor is seized for a debt.
They cause the poor to go naked, without clothing; And they take away the sheaves from the hungry.10Without clothing, they wander about naked. They carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.
They press out oil within their walls, And tread winepresses, yet suffer thirst.11They crush olives within their walls; they tread the winepresses, but go thirsty.
The dying groan in the city, And the souls of the wounded cry out; Yet God does not charge them with wrong.12From the city, men groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet God charges no one with wrongdoing.
“There are those who rebel against the light; They do not know its ways Nor abide in its paths.13Then there are those who rebel against the light, not knowing its ways or staying on its paths.
The murderer rises with the light; He kills the poor and needy; And in the night he is like a thief.14When daylight is gone, the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy; in the night he is like a thief.
The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, Saying, ‘No eye will see me’; And he disguises his face.15The eye of the adulterer watches for twilight. Thinking, ‘No eye will see me,’ he covers his face.
In the dark they break into houses Which they marked for themselves in the daytime; They do not know the light.16In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in, never to experience the light.
For the morning is the same to them as the shadow of death; If someone recognizes them, They are in the terrors of the shadow of death.17For to them, deep darkness is their morning; surely they are friends with the terrors of darkness!
“They should be swift on the face of the waters, Their portion should be cursed in the earth, So that no one would turn into the way of their vineyards.18They are but foam on the surface of the water; their portion of the land is cursed, so that no one turns toward their vineyards.
As drought and heat consume the snow waters, So the grave consumes those who have sinned.19As drought and heat consume the melting snow, so Sheol steals those who have sinned.
The womb should forget him, The worm should feed sweetly on him; He should be remembered no more, And wickedness should be broken like a tree.20The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is like a broken tree.
For he preys on the barren who do not bear, And does no good for the widow.21They prey on the barren and childless, and show no kindness to the widow.
“But God draws the mighty away with His power; He rises up, but no man is sure of life.22Yet by His power, God drags away the mighty; though rising up, they have no assurance of life.
He gives them security, and they rely on it; Yet His eyes are on their ways.23He gives them a sense of security, but His eyes are on their ways.
They are exalted for a little while, Then they are gone. They are brought low; They are taken out of the way like all others; They dry out like the heads of grain.24They are exalted for a moment, then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others; they are cut off like heads of grain.
“Now if it is not so, who will prove me a liar, And make my speech worth nothing?”25If this is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?”
