| 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. | 1For the music director; By David, a psalm. I relied completely on the LORD, and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help. |
| 2He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. | 2He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing. |
| 3He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him. | 3He gave me reason to sing a new song, praising our God. May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the LORD! |
| 4Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. | 4How blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD and does not seek help from the proud or from liars! |
| 5Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare. | 5O LORD, my God, you have accomplished many things; you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. No one can thwart you! I want to declare them and talk about them, but they are too numerous to recount! |
| 6Sacrifice and offering you did not desire-- but my ears you have opened -- burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. | 6Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. You make that quite clear to me! You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings. |
| 7Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-- it is written about me in the scroll. | 7Then I say, "Look! I come! What is written in the scroll pertains to me. |
| 8I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart." | 8I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your law dominates my thoughts." |
| 9I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know. | 9I have told the great assembly about your justice. Look! I spare no words! O LORD, you know this is true. |
| 10I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly. | 10I have not failed to tell about your justice; I spoke about your reliability and deliverance; I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. |
| 11Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD; may your love and faithfulness always protect me. | 11O LORD, you do not withhold your compassion from me. May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me! |
| 12For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. | 12For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me. |
| 13Be pleased to save me, LORD; come quickly, LORD, to help me. | 13Please be willing, O LORD, to rescue me! O LORD, hurry and help me! |
| 14May all who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. | 14May those who are trying to snatch away my life be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who want to harm me be turned back and ashamed! |
| 15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. | 15May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be humiliated and disgraced! |
| 16But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, "The LORD is great!" | 16May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you! May those who love to experience your deliverance say continually, "May the LORD be praised!" |
| 17But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay. | 17I am oppressed and needy! May the Lord pay attention to me! You are my helper and my deliverer! O my God, do not delay! |
