David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. | 1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. |
He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; | 2He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. |
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-- from violent people you save me. | 3My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! |
"I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. | 4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. |
The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. | 5The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. |
The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. | 6The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. |
"In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. | 7In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. |
The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry. | 8The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. |
Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. | 9Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. |
He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. | 10He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. |
He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. | 11He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. |
He made darkness his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky. | 12He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. |
Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. | 13From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. |
The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. | 14The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. |
He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. |
The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. | 16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. |
"He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. | 17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. |
He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. | 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. |
He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. | 20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. |
"The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. | 21The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. |
For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God. | 22For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. |
All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. | 23For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. |
I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. | 24I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. |
The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. | 25The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. |
"To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, | 26You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. |
to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. | 27You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. |
You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. | 28You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. |
You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. | 29Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. |
With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. | 30Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. |
"As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. | 31The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. |
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? | 32Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? |
It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. | 33The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. |
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. | 34He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. |
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. | 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. |
You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. | 36You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. |
You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. | 37You widen my path; my feet do not slip. |
"I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. | 38I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. |
I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. | 39I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. |
You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. | 40You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. |
You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. | 41You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. |
They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer. | 42They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. |
I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. | 43I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. |
"You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, | 44You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. |
foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. | 45Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. |
They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. | 46Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. |
"The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior! | 47The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! |
He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, | 48The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. |
who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. | 49He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. |
Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. | 50So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. |
"He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever." | 51He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" |
