| 1Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. | 1Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. | 2The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. | 2and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium. |
| 3Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. | 3Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. |
| 4As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. | 4Now while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering the decrees which had been decided upon by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem, for them to observe. |

| 13On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. | 13And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled. |
| 14One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. | 15When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us. | 15And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us. |
| 16Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. | 16It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling. |
| 17She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." | 17Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, "These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation." |
| 18She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. | 18She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out at that very moment. |

| 20They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar | 20and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, "These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, |
| 21by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice." | 21and are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans." |
| 22The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. | 22The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods. |
| 23After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. | 23When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely; |

| 37But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out." | 37But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us in public without trial, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they sending us away secretly? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out." |
| 38The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. | 38The policemen reported these words to the chief magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that they were Romans, |
| 39They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city. | 39and they came and appealed to them, and when they had brought them out, they kept begging them to leave the city. |
| 40After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left. | 40They went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia, and when they saw the brethren, they encouraged them and departed. |
