1If you see your fellow Israelite's ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. | 1Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother. |
2If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. | 2And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again. |
3Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it. | 3In like manner shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his raiment; and with all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide thyself. |
4If you see your fellow Israelite's donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet. | 4Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. |
5A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this. | 5The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. |
6If you come across a bird's nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young. | 6If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young: |
7You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life. | 7But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days. |
8When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof. | 8When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence. |
9Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled. | 9Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled. |
10Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together. | 10Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. |
11Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together. | 11Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together. |
12Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear. | 12Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself. |
13If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her | 13If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, |
14and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, "I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity," | 14And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: |
15then the young woman's father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. | 15Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: |
16Her father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. | 16And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; |
17Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, | 17And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. |
18and the elders shall take the man and punish him. | 18And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; |
19They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. | 19And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. |
20If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman's virginity can be found, | 20But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: |
21she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you. | 21Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. |
22If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. | 22If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. |
23If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, | 23If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; |
24you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death--the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you. | 24Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. |
25But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. | 25But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die: |
26Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, | 26But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: |
27for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her. | 27For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. |
28If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, | 28If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; |
29he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. | 29Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. |
30A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not dishonor his father's bed. | 30A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt. |
